Looking for a NEW LAPTOP for running 3D APPLICATIONS

Hey I'm currently in my last year at secondary school and im planning to do Animation (mainly computer animation) at uni or college. I need a bit of help choosing wat kind of laptop will be suited for this sort of work.

The maximum price im lookin at is around 700 (or US$ equivalent). I dont mind which company im lookin at, but im looking for one that does reliable machines. The specs that i am idealy looking at are similar to these:
1GB RAM
80 - 120GB HD
128MB Graphics card (not shared)

I also need to know whether i need a more powerful graphics card to run prgrams such as 3DS Max / Miya / Lightwave and similar programs that require 3D. If anyone can make any suggestions of any particular laptops of any kind, while preferably being 700 or under (or US$ equivelent), it would be much appreciated.

Im lookin at the Compaq Presario V6065ea for this job, so if anyone can give me any advice, please give me some pointers.

Thanks in advance

For running 3DS Max and Lightwave, 128 won't usually cut it. MAYA (not miya, i think you mean't maya) will need 256, and running directx, c++, etc. will require 512. Dell m90 is pretty nice, but I really hate dell :D. Plus, for a 1000 usd budget, the best you can get is a cheapie. HP, like you were considering, is good enough, but for heavy-duty graphics needs, it won't cut it.

Semy wrote:BTW, do you think the Acer Aspire 5622WLMi will do the job for me? Its specs are:

  • Intel Centrino Core Duo Processor 1.66GHz

  • 1GB DDRII SDRAM

  • 80GB Hard Drive

  • ATI Mobility Radeon X1300 with up to 512 MB of HyperMemory

I dont know what the hypermemory is but the 512MB of graphics caught my attention. Can anyone tell me if this is good enough please? And please if you have any other suggestions, let me know i need all the help i can get.

Thanks in advance

MMMMMM< NOOOOO The 1 gb of RAM is really bad, 2 gigs minimum (you can buy off newegg if you want), and proc is waaay too slow. Gimme 30 mins, ill find you a budget mobile workstation (btw, i work for 2 graphics design companies, one blizzard, so you know our needs are higher then yours, but for 1000 usd you can get a nice one, no flares )

Heres what I came up with (all under 1260usd) Dell is your best bet if your on a slim budget... But i managed to find a nice acer with sweet graphics. All of them are good, but it's best to inspect reviews (notebookreview.com is THE BEST!!) and forums (notebookforums.com is THE BEST!!) to find your personel best choice. If I only had 1000 usd, then I would get the dell e1505, it's the best under 1k and you can upgrade it to suit your needs. here are my pics: (4 options)

And, here's one last option I found (4), again, hard to find budget buys, Im used to 4-5k budgets :(

Power on a Budger: Area-51 m5550
Power and Mobility: Area-51 m5750
Mobile Carnage, Widow Maker: Area-51 m7700
The most expensive option, if you want style.

looks good, couldn't find a review for it, just pricing (799 euro was lowest), so see if they have a 30-day satisfaction gaurentee before buying, just in case. Enjoy making some sweet 3D images!

Go with the acer, and get windows pro. Costs 100 usd more but its much bettter then home and media. Vista won't be usable really til service pack 2, so that'll take maybe 1-2 years. Acer has a rep. of building cool running, business class laptops, so you know the keyboard and touchpad are good. Also, you get a MP and webcam, which is cool. Philips is an off-brand for laptops, the service will be a pain. Also, the processor is very low-end on Phil. Acer has a pretty standard one on there, stable and usable.

My opinion: Acer.

the acer has more memory, but the philips has nvidia, which i like better. Acer is better all in all.
