How Can I Attach a .jpg File

In OE, how do you attach a .jpg file to a message without inserting it in the message itself?

Hi PDPeck and welcome to the PCWorld Communities. :D

First, I have changed your Discussion title to give a clearer indication of your question. For future reference, please be as descriptive as possible in both the heading of your Discussion as well as the post itself.

Now, please take a look at the attached screen shot (Click on the image to enlarge it)

untitled (4).JPG

Within your Outlook Express, you should see a paper clip. Once you click on that icon, you will get a browse window where you can search for the .jpg you want to attach to the email.

Re: How Can I Attach a .jpg File
Yes, that is much clearer, thank you. I do not believe that has any basis on the email client you use. Have you tested this with emails to yourself? If you attach an email via the method outlined, the attachment is "attached" to the email. How it is viewed by the recipient is determined by the email client he or she uses.

Now, I do know that if, for example, you take a screen shot and paste it into the body of the email...which is technically still an attachment...that email will obviously have the "attachment" within the body of the email when the recipient gets the email.

I hope my explanation is clear enough. If anyone has any knowledge to either confirm or contradict these statements, please post.

The above is the key. I know that some email clients will display any commonly recongnizable attached file in the body of the message. And what an email client deems as "commonly recognizable" can vary from email client to email client. I want to say that I have used an email client that will display attached PDFs in the body of the message. JPGs are a MUCH more "commonly recognizable" format...and I have encountered several email clients that will display them in the message.

Some times you can turn that function off in your email client so it does NOT do that. I believe it can also depend on what type of messages you have your email client set to use...HTML, RTF, or plain text messages.

Re: How Can I Attach a .jpg File

One way I've found to get around this problem is to just zip the image before attaching it. The recipient will have to unzip on their end, but it prevents the image from being shown in the message. Lotus Notes will embed images that were sent as attachments via Outlook, and won't let the recipient un-attach them, it's a pain.

Thanks. Now I know that the display is determined at the receiving end. I thought I must be missing a setting.

You can try this:

http://forums.pcworld.com/servlet/JiveServlet/downloadImage/4336/oe.jpg

Put a check in the item labelled "Read All Messages in Plain Text". That might do it. Of course, if you get an message from someone that is formatted in HTML (as a lot of email newsletters from websites or online stores), then it will not display nearly as pretty. This is the "Options..." command under the Tools menu.
