Help me figure out what i need for under $1000

i'm buying a new comp and would appreciate some suggestions. If i list what i want to do with the new computer could someone make a suggestion as to what i should be looking at. I just bought a new digital camera and would like to do some light pic and video editing, storing the pics on the HD. would like to burn the digital video to dvd and also have 8mm video cassets i would like to transfer to dvd. I will not be playing video games but would like to be able to get all online content in a faster manner than i am presently ( i currently am using a hp Pavillion-400mhz, 6 gig hd , 127ram, win98se:oops: ). I also will be using it to download music and video to an i-pod.

I've been trying to read and educate myself but there is just so much out there that I'm really not sure of how much memory i need ,graphics card,hd size, etc. Should i go with a dual core processor. I've been told to get a pci video card(?) and any where from 512 to 2gig of ram. I have been on Tiger Direct and they have 2sony vaio's :

HP has one i was looking at there also. I'm looking at staying as far under $1000 as possible. Advice from someone more knowledgeable would be greatly appreciated._

How about this...#2 lol
With all the video you are doing tho you will want a larger Hard Drive 120 gig or larger. And make sure you get a powerful power supply as this vid card has to have power ran to it directly from the power supply. I have had 2 of the x power 550 watts now on seperate systems and they work fine even tho under $20!

if you want a nice PC for under 1000, then i suggest www.ibuypower.com
i've suggested this on other forums in pcworld as well. i guess you could say i'm an advocate. but i'm a really big fan of their site.

you can build/customize the computer you want and you can build a really powerful desktop that'll be vista compatible for under 1000. i built one for around 600. and a couple of friends i know who tried it have been very satisfied.

check them out.

Photoshop and Video editing, are the 2 things that will break the bank on your computer, as both programs are resource hogs, and the Adobe versions are coded for multiprocessor cpu's, so ....., a dual core cpu and 2 gigs of ram, or you'll be waiting on the hourglass symbol, instead of editing.Single cores will work, just a lot more s l o w l y ... . . . . . .
