Win XP just looping

Turn the computer on, it starts to boot, I see the compaq splash screen
then the blue windows is starting. Then it just restarts the process
over.

I have tried to repair windows:

I've ried The F8 to last known good config & F8 safe mode and it just restarts from both of those as well.

Win XP SP3

Thank you

UPDATE: Currently doing this:
You can boot from the cd and press R to go to the recovery console.
Your best bet is to try running Checkdisk. So once in the recovery
console, type chkdsk /r and press enter. It could take from 20 minutes
to a couple of hours, depending on the repairs it needs to make. That didn't work

Went back into the Recovery Console using the Xp CD and this time typed "fixmbr" that also didn't work

HD is about 7 months old. Computer is about 5-6 years old.

Running out of options here. I do NOT want to reformat if I do not have to. I have alot of photos of the grand daughter on there.

Thank you

Hi Zombie

So you have tried safe mode -not working , last good config - not working , fixmbr - not needed but you also tried that  fine.
One more thing you can try through the XP install disc is the repair option. This repair is different from the recovery console. When you boot from XP disc , go on to select the option to install XP , the setup should automatically detect a previous windows installation and will ask if you want to install fresh and new or repair this installation . Press "R" while selecting that option to start the file repair process. It may or may not work but this is the last thing that is left in the XP disc. Don't delete any partition and don't install new , just repair , follow onscreen instructions carefully and data will be fine .

If it works , then good, If not, then we will have to looks for data recovery options available in your case.

I had the same problem a couple of days ago , After trying so many options this is what worked for me , Make sure you set you Anti virus to clean any virus or malaware after is done cleaning , then Go to safe mode and scan your computer .I m sure its a virus you have thats causing you the trouble.

Re: Win XP just looping
One of your startup processes is crashing badly. The problem is determining which one; and it can be very tricky to figure that out.

I've seen this problem on perhaps a dozen XP systems over the years. I've actually fixed it only a few times. Normally, debug efforts were clearly taking too long, and data salvage/re-install emerged as the most expedient fix. (I do computer services for a living.)

In those cases I've repaired this symptom, it was always a driver or service issue. I've resolved it by deleting or moving files from the suspect software (most often by booting from a Linux LiveCD such as Knoppix). It was McAfee AV in one instance, in another I vaguely recall it was a failed un-install of a Norton security suite (which left the Registry in a terrible mess). In another case it was a bad driver which had been offered-up by Windows Update.

Incidentally I have seen serious problems with hardware driver updates from WU quite a few times, for various hardware types -- sound, video, NICs. Normally it's simple enough to roll-back to the former driver, but I have learned to use caution in accepting those optional hardware updates from WU. I haven't analyzed the problem much. It may be mis-identifying hardware or mistaking one subtly different model or chipset for another.

Re: Win XP just looping
Zombie - you actually have an easy way to recover if this is a desktop. It will take a new drive, which you install in the place of the original and use your install disc to format and install XP. Once you have XP installed on the new drive and up and running, install the original as a second drive and simply recover all the data files, pictures, etc. by copying over. You can then work on reinstalling all the applications and updates. It will take a while, but if you reformat the original drive it will take as long, and you will lose the data.

If this is a notebook (you did not specify), it will cost a slight bit more as you will need either an enclosure for the original drive to connect it via the USB port or a multi-drive (3.5" IDE, 2.5" IDE and SATA) adapter to connect the drive to the USB port. This is not necessary to install XP on the new drive, but to recover the data and photos off the original drive.

Re: Win XP just looping

if you want to backup data, boot a live linux distro and copy all essential data to a flashdrive/external hard drive/online storage, etc.

Recommended live distros-

ubuntu
opensuse
knoppix
pclinux 9.3

note, you will need a cd burner and an iso burning program to do this. I recommend imgburn

also, most distros can't write to nfts formatted drives, they can read them though. So if your external drive is ntfs, you will have to use a flashdrive.

Btw, your problem seems to relate to the unending boot loop that is caused in compaq & hp computers with AMD processors after upgrading to sp3. Does your computer fit this? What model is your compaq computer?

Caps lock, not necessary all the time.

Re: Win XP just looping
Repartitioning your drive would be much cheaper ($0 or $50+ ?). Just reinstall XP on the new partition, copy your data, and reformat the old partition to use as a data partition (or something like that).

Re: Win XP just looping

I am glad it worked out. A re-install is always a last option, but sometimes it is quicker to re-install (if you have a way to save the data) than to continue fighting it. Enjoy your rescued PC.
