Hi lgutwill and welcome to the PCWorld Communities. :D

First, the Discussion to which you have posted your concern is in relation to the news article. I have branched your issue into its own Discussion. If you can, please detail the exact process you followed to attempt to create a partition. The more information you provide us the better we can assist you.

what are your computer's drive specs?

I can't see your computer, unless there's a talented hacker floating around to get that info for me. -jk ;)

what program are you using and what o/s is running ?

Caps lock, not necessary all the time.

How much free space is shown to be on the drive?

How big of a partition do you want to make?

Have you defragged the drive?

Re: Unable to Create Partitions in Windows Vista

Hi Igutwill,

I also faced this problem and I realize that currently Vista only allow maximum 4 partition per hard disk. Which means you can't create more than 4 partition for each single hard disk. So if you plan to shrink, nothing much you can do unless you merge with other partition. Hope it helps.

You are getting it a bit wrong here. The limit is 4 primary partitions and that is with XP also. If you want to have more than 4 partitions , then you will have to create extended partitions . I have 5 partitons on my one HDD.

Hi Maxting and welcome to the PCWorld Communities. :D

I agree with Piyush. I have 3TBs (Terabytes) of hard drive space partitioned into several smaller sections. There is no limit to the amount of partitions you can create. However, as he stated, you can only have up to four primary partitions in any one single drive.

Re: Unable to Create Partitions in Windows Vista

Two of us have been searching for hours (forums, newsgroups, google) on how to create more then 4 partitions in on the same drive in Vista. We understand you can't have any more then 4 primary partitions. Here is how the Dell M1530 XPS came preconfigured as:

Partition 1 = OEM (Dell Utilities)
Partition 2 = Primiary (Dell Recovery)
Partition 3 = Primary (C Drive with Vista)
Partition 0 = Extended
Partition 4 = Logical

NOTE: Partition 0 or 4 is for Dell Media Direct.

The volumes are:

Volume 0 E DVD-ROM
Volume 1 D Recovery
Volume C OS

Partition 3 is 220GB in size. I want to shrink it to 60GB's. This would leave about 160GB as Unallocated that I want to format and assign a drive letter to (a Volume I guess).

We've also played around with DiskPart a lot, so we're pretty familiar with it, although not experts. All of the instructions on the web are the same, as none of them work with more then 4 partitions of any type.

Would you mind taking the time to post how to do it please?

Thank you!
