It would be useful for stories like this one to point out that these botnets are made up exclusively of MICROSOFT WINDOWS PCs. While other operating systems also have security issues, trojan horse email viruses only afflict MS-Windows.

removed are you trying to claim that IRC worms don't exist on *nix based operating systems? A very well known one is called 'kaiten' -it has nothing to do with the operating system-it has to do with a vulnerablity in a service, and a robot coded in whatever programming language that connects to IRC, and it's owner execute modules that were programmed into it, such as scanning systems for vulnerabliites and exploiting them.
