Prevent automatic Internet connection via LAN in Vista?

I get automatically connected to the Internet (through the LAN connection) as soon as I start Windows. I was wondering if it's possible to prevent this? I want to connect through my ISP and not be connected all the time if I don't want to be. I check Network Connections and the LAN is connected to the Internet and I can also connect to my ISP simultaneously so 2 connections are showing. How do I prevent automatic Internet connection via LAN?

I connect to my ISP through Cable Modem and a Network Cable. Usually when I start windows I am not connected to the Internet. Then I go to connect to a network and click the VPN connection and it asks for username and password and then I get connected. Now, the Internet connection comes on by itself and I cannot disconnect. When I say LAN I mean my Local Area Connection which shows up under LAN and High Speed Internet and then my ISP falls under VPN when I see them in Network Connections. My service is not unlimited internet instead I have a package for 30 hours so above them I get charged per hour.

I really don't know how to fix this!

Hi tamaramr24

Open internet explorer. Go to tools -> internet options . Then move to connections tab Here you can setup a new connection or a dial-up or VPN which will over-ride the internet through LAN.

The settings should here should be easy to work with.

Hi Tamaramr and welcome to the PCWorld Communities. :D

If I may ask, why do you not want to have your LAN connection automatically available upon restart?

One of the benefits of having a LAN connection is that it is "always on." A very basic, albeit unconventional, way getting the result you want is to just disconnect the ethernet cable from either the modem or the computer before your computer starts and then plug it back in when you are ready to access the internet.

Can you access the internet via the automatic connection? If not, you are probably just on the local network. When you sign in, You then open a second connection to the Internet. If this is the case, you are not wasting any of your time.

Have you contacted your ISP (Internet Service Provider) to confirm if there have been any changes to your account or to the way they provide access to LAN connections such as yours?
