Not able to access internet Zonealarm may be the reason

Heilsa!

I have a friend that has zonealarm on their PC and they can't access the internet when zonealarm is on. When it is off they can. It is 12:29 am and I am trying to get a quick answer if there is one as I got them on the telephone trying to fix the problem. We even uninstalled zonealarm and reinstalled it to no avail. Does anyone know what to do or try?

refer to the first response, seems that its an error in Windows Update and tells you how to remove it.

Re: Not able to access internet Zonealarm may be the reason

I went to bed last night thinking my ISP was down. I had tried calling, but didn't get a rep after half an hour (a common sign when there's internet problems). When I still couldn't get online this morning, I hunted it down. When I discovered ZA was keeping me offline, I thought "Great, all I need to do to get online is turn off my firewall." Fortunately I went to the ZA forum and learned how easy it is to fix. I chose the option of uninstalling the MS update rather than turning down ZA's setting. Of course, I then had to go to the Windows Update site and tell it to stop sending me the update! :)

You chose to uninstall the msft update rather than changing the ZA setting. If i had ZA , i would have done the other way. The tuesday updates are important security updates that need not be left. The problem is related to ZA and not msft. So ZA will have to do the wrork here .

Re: Not able to access internet Zonealarm may be the reason
According to the ZA forum, MS has accepted responsibility for the problem and will correct it. I chose the option I did because I've lived without that update for all this time without any trouble, and I can wait until MS gets it right.

Another factor in my decision: I trust ZA's ability to keep me safe more than I trust MS's ability. The other solution would require me to reduce ZA's protection and rely more heavily on MS's protection.

I uninstalled the update myself. I don't really like having my Zone Alarm on medium. Your going to reduce your security one way or another until this gets fixed.

Re: Not able to access internet Zonealarm may be the reason

Okay, good, so this isn't just my problem. The odd thing is, I did a System Restore on the two systems in my household that were applicable, everything was fine. I come here to look for a reason, and here it is.

Y'know, I always preferred ZoneAlarm's simplicity over Comodo's solidity. I think I may be changing my mind now.

Thanks for nothing, Microsoft!

I had thought a moderator had published the "MS's fault" info, but it wasn't. Here's a link to the post followed by the post itself. I've included the link for those who wish to read the entire thread.

==================================

Today (Tuesday, 08 July 2008) is "patch Tuesday" for Microsoft.

There is a bad patch in this latest release: #951748.

#951748 installs fine but kills Internet Explorer after the reboot.

Two hours on the phone this afternoon with Microsoft Technical Support for
IE7 determined that Zone Alarm's two "FIREWALL Security Zone" settings (INTERNET
and TRUSTED) must be reduced from HIGH to MEDIUM to get IE7 to find web sites.
Otherwise, on a 7 Mb DSL connection, after about 60 seconds, IE reports it is
unable to open the URL. Reducing the Zone Alarm settings to MEDIUM right while
IE is struggling to find a web site results in IE's instantly opening the web
site.

Command window 'PINGs' return all packets without loss, proving the DSL
connection is alive and well, despite IE's failures.

Microsoft has admitted to me that they have a problem with #951748. They
tell me that it is theirs to fix, not Zone Alarm's.

My system is an HP PC running WXP Home Edition SP2, Internet Explorer 7 v.
7.0.5730.11 and Zone Alarm v. 7.0.470.000.

Re: Not able to access internet Zonealarm may be the reason

The update kills internet access for both IE7 and Firefox2. This implies it's not an update directed at patching IE's (lack of) security.

Re: Not able to access internet Zonealarm may be the reason
This is what the ZA moderators say : http://forum.zonealarm.com/zonelabs/board/message?board.id=win_za_msgs&thread.id=18667

Its ZA that is working on it and not msft and that is very correct in my opinion .And the entire world is blaming msft for this.

This update didnt cripple any other firewalls , only ZA. So how can msft be responsible for this. The patch tuesday updates also have the Important DNS patch that is a big security vulnerability . I just noticed , a similar update was made on my ubuntu also. Infact it was for all debian based distributions . This sort of patch was coming was known beforehand. ZA should have been prepared for this.
