Threatfire 3.5 Installation Froze My Computer

Relating my experience with the free download of Threatfire 3.5. It appeared to install properly, however, immediately my computer (OS Windows XP) froze up. Nothing would work, not even system restore. I finally ran system restore from safe mode, which removed Threatfire from my computer - which resolved all the problems. I have requested that PCTools (distributor of Threatfire) advise me of what went wrong, and alerting them of the problem

Hi MrTJHolden and welcome to the PCWorld Communities. :D

First, some housekeeping. I have changed your Discussion title to give a clearer indication of your question. For future reference, please be as descriptive as possible in both the heading of your Discussion as well as the post itself. Also, I have moved this Discussion from the Reader Input Community into the Privacy & Security Community.

Now, since you already did a System Restore, there really is no way for us to figure out what may have been the issue. Are you going to wait for a response from PCTools before attempting another installation or are you willing to give it another try?

Re: Threatfire 3.5 Installation Froze My Computer

:D Hi :

I hope you realize that Threatfire is NOT a "classical" "anti-virus" program ( misnamed by

PC Tools ) , but a "HIPS" ( Host-based Intrusion Prevention System ) program . There is

quite a bit of talk by knowledgeable Users on the Wilders Security Forums about this "type"

of program ; by what I read there, many seem to favor "DefenseWall", available at

http://www.softsphere.com , rather than ThreatFire, which in the Past was known as

CyberHawk .

Re: Threatfire 3.5 Installation Froze My Computer

Like mrtjholden, experinence, installing Threatfire 3.5 completly froze my computer. If the progam cannot run as it shiould, it is acadmic if the Threatfire is a Host-based Intrusion Prevention System program or not. It simply does not work. I started my computer in Safe Mode (Windowa XP SP3) and uninstalled Threatfire.

Cheers

I happened to see this thread and thought I'd put my two cents, which is what I might pay for Threat Fire, did the same to me and also had a hard time uninstalling it, it seem very invasive almost viral like. This is a while ago, but I will never install it again. But the firewall is very good....go figure.

Just adding my 2c worth... Windows Media Edition with SP3. Tried to scan twice with this program, but it hung both times. It was imposible to shut down, even doing a three fingered salute. Hard power down was the only option both times. I didn't have any problem uninstalling it. I've tried programs that were in alpha stage testing which behaved better than this program.
