Re: Piyushsingh Opera Questions

Hey Aurora!!

I really don't know about Opera BUT, I am now using FLOCK, the browser not the birds.LOL!

If you like your FLCKR , and FACEBOOK and YouTube and PhotoBuckets . This is a Social Browser.

But , quite frankly it is more FIREFOX 2 than anything else. It is very stable. I have been using this browser

for the last three days and not once did it crash. Pretty impressive.

They do have a AdBlocker and SpellChecker and you can directlink to any of your favorite social sites.

I configured this browser to, when I close Flock, to remember the last page I have visited. Most of the time

PCWorld is my last site before shutdown. Now when I open FLOCK again it will bring me back to PCW.

AND I am already signed in because I didn't signout when I closed FLOCK. Talk about convenient!

OK, Aurora, I'm really no help with Opera but, I'm sure when Piyush signs in he will give you all the answers

you need.

Re: Piyushsingh Opera Questions
Hi Aurora
The thread topic looked like "Microsoft windows questions" , with first two words replaced. LOL ,. Anyway.

As for the ad-block plus , there is only the old content blocking that comes inbuilt in Opera .

Spellchecker - i had read somewhere that Opera can take standalone spellcheckers , and use it . I ll find that info and try it and tell you if i get any success.

new features - To tell the truth , i don't remember what is new and what is old . :) The browser is so old , that all things are already available in it from versions.IMO. other browsers add it to their newer version after seeing Opera's feature list. Am i right ?
* Most of the old features are improved .
* Changed the default skin , though the old skin is present and can be switched but i love the new one .
* Fraud protection now also has phishing filter added.
* opera link added -  same as smart bookmark that was added in firedfox 3 .
* security . performance changes . blah blah ....... blah. you wont be interested in that if i copy paste a changelog . hehe

i don't know , but , is the ad-block so much important ?
ok, i know that answer isn't satisfactory . I ll try to get some more info , but that will need some time.

Re: Piyushsingh Opera Questions
adblock is that important lol and that is the main reason why ff3 is still my primary browser. Opera 9.5 really is quick. It loads cnn in less than a sec compared to any browser. Its speeds are also great too. It has a built in blocker as far as i know

Re: Piyushsingh Opera Questions
that feature is "content blocking" and its not ad -block as it doesn't work automatically. In fact it has a plus point and a negative one also. The negative thing is that it has to be fed manually initially by clicking on frames that you want to block on a we page. But that is once until the frame link gets changed. The plus point is that , it can block anything and not just ads , so if you want some part of a page blocked coz of whatever reason you have , you can do it.

The reason why there isn't any adblock in opera inbuilt is that if they do it, then all the websites will selectively block Opera users to maintain their ad revenue. The same thing is for FF .FF doesnt have any such feature built but its the 3rd party addons that give it this feature. So the websites don't have anything against FF .

Re: Piyushsingh Opera Questions
why would i use Opera if its slow?
Yes. it loads faster for me. I have been on this browser for 3yrs now since it became free. But it mainly banks on its customizability and tons of features pre-loaded.

Re: Piyushsingh Opera Questions
Ok - i found a very good spell checking solution and now i have tested this and i m using this on mine also. It works really well and see this snip of it working here in PCW forum comment window. I tried ASpell and it wasnt good, but now i found OSpell which is very nice.
You see the small icon on the right hand lower corner of comment window . Just click it and rest you will be able to do easily.

How to get it : OSpell
This uses java script and its really easy to set it up. This page has it all. If you need any help, feel free to post. There is a small video on that opage that will make this thing very easy.

I hope this will bring you one more step closer to Opera. :D
One obstacle left - ADblock , i will get to it too. Just give me some time.

Re: Piyushsingh Opera Questions
Hey Piyush!!

OK, I'm trying out this Opera thing once more!!!!!!!!!!

BTW , If you want a spell checker in O this is the link to the page

Opera spell checker .

My reason for this post Piyush is to ask How in the heck do you upload a picture

in here.I have tried and the "Insert Image" comes up. I can then select an image

to upload but, when I click on the "Insert" at the bottom of the pop-up , it disappears.

Do you know how frustrating this is. Just kidding. I would like to know though,

how to do it Piyush, but only if you have the time to explain "Step by Step" PLZ.

You know how I love it when you take the time to explain how things work to me Piyush.

So , if it's not to much trouble I would REALLY appreciate this.

Thankx Piyush. ( did I ask nice enough )?

Re: Piyushsingh Opera Questions
Hi Flashorn
  • First thing , where is the red leaf? it looks so nice. Are you trying to say that it is missing because of opera ? Ok, i get it now. No problems , all will, be fixed. :)
A suggestion - why don't you add the leaf in the siggy ?

  • The link you have given is for GNU-ASpell. See in my previous post. I have talked about it and this checker is really bad. You have to highlight , then right click and check . Its also not inline. basically its useless.

  • So i have later talked about OSpell . This is what i m using . Its so much better and i m damn sure Aurora would also like it. I don't even use the pcw forum spellcheck . This one gives no pup-ups windows , can take many languages and it invokes on its own on writing to an editable text area.

  • Now for adding images - this thing had troubled me in past , and was resolved by AuroraDizon . You know what , rgreen also tried Opera but got the same problem and i think he is using FF again because of this. I did explain how to get past this thing , but the explanation in the PM may have been a bit long. :( . I ll explain the thing, but not here as it may get long and will become off-topic for this thread. We still need to find out the ad-block plus alternative and that will take some work , so the topics for this thread are full at the moment.
this - http://forums.pcworld.com/thread/27618?tstart=0 is that thread. I want you to read this once and then continue there. The thing should become clear after reading this.If you have any problem then plz post there only . I ll be happy to assist.

Hi Aurora.
Regarding adblocking - I was looking at the urlfilter.ini file and this method looks easy to me than using external python scripts.I think you are aware of this file - urlfilter.ini .This is what i think about this issue - the default "content blocking" also uses this file as the filter. You may confirm this by blocking a couple of frames and then open the ini file . You will see the blocked urls in the "excluded section" of the file.
I found many references on some sites regarding adding a known list to this "excluded" part. The list will have wildcard used to make it small. The only thing left is to find the best list and put it there. The restriction is that if this file becomes large then it will cause slow startup of Opera . I think the size limit is 500k or something(not sure about size) but it was on their official site somewhere. So a compact and efficient list is to be searched.

Looking for your thoughts on this. Since you are busy these days, no problems if its delayed.

Hey Aurora!!

ThankYou for responding but, you see I didn't pay attention to or
did not see that thread because I was not interested in using O.
Now, I will give it another shot.
