Which Virtual Machine Should I Use to Install Linux (Ubuntu)

I am looking to install 8.04 on a virtual machine in order to begin cert training for computer forensics course. I am at odds as to which VM i should use or which is most compatible with this version of linux. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi djq2157
If you want to install ubuntu 8.04 on a virtual machine , then you may install it on virtualbox . Virtualbox is freely available at their site. Or you may also try my favorite VMware . It has a limited time trial offer . You may purchase it after that if you like it.

Instead of virtual install , you can also try the wubi install for ubuntu. It installs ubuntu on windows partition only . A part of disk space is emulated as ext3 and ubuntu resides on it. It is very easy to install and there is no risk of messing up with partitions and thus it is suited for beginners . Wubi will stay in add/remove programs of windows and can be easily removed. It takes a slight performance drop from the normal install .

Or you can install it clean with dual boot setup with your windows , if you want . So you have a lot of choices . Use what suits you better.

Hi DJQ and welcome to the PCWorld Communities. :D

First, some housekeeping. I have changed your Discussion title to give a clearer indication of your question. For future reference, please be as descriptive as possible in both the heading of your Discussion as well as the post itself. Also, since you are looking for a virtual machine, I have moved this Discussion from the Linux Community into the Other Software & Services Community.

Now, any virtual machine will work for your needs. A while back, I used VMware and had no problems running Ubuntu within it. VMware has a free 30-day trial which is accessible here. There are plenty of other virtual machines so please be patient while other Community members review this Discussion and provide their suggestions.
