Re: found a couple of freebee's, antivirus and firewall

Hey whatup!!

OK, Intranet is a internal network or local network. If you are connected directly to the newspaper

you are talking about or connected to the local area network then, you may allow it. Otherwise the FW will block your connection

to it as you discovered. Don't forget that a FW is a leaning program and all of your

programs and connections are new to it. So, in order to learn what to connect to

or not to connect to well, it must ask permission. And from there when this program

or connection tries to make a connection with the internet then, the FW will

recognize the permission.

Do you ever get in IE7 at the top of the page a blue bar saying something like

"Intranet policies have been changed in favor of the more secure "Internet policies".

Well, that is why your FW is asking permission. Because an "Intranet network"

could be more vulnerable to an outside attack. But, in your case , if you know the network

then, you should allow the FW to connect to it.

Now, about your Trojans and backdoor and all the rest you have mentioned.

These are "By Default" rules .Meaning that IF you should ever get to a site that has one of

those on the site and tries to infect your PC ,The "By Default" rules built in the FW

will automatically BLOCK these infections "With Ought" asking for permission.

Do NOt delete any of those rules because then you would be vulnerable to an attack from

the rule that you deleted. Although , Avira would scare the hell out of you by sounding this

very loud and high pitch noise along with a pop-up asking you if you want to grant

permission or not. the pop-up usually has it already marked as permission denied\

and all you would have to do is click on the OK button.

Regarding Filseclab : IF you have NOT already done so, it would be wise to read through

the "Topics" at http://www.filseclab.com/eng/help/xfilter.htm ; they also have a "Leave

Message" Option .

Re: found a couple of freebee's, antivirus and firewall

Hey whatup!!

I'm glad that things are working out for you. I think you put in enough thought

and time to make everything work right.

Now, we're not done just yet. Yeah I know, I'm a pain in the a** when it comes

to making sure everything is as it should be.

OK, now we have to test this new FW by going to online scanners that will try and

bust through your security.

You could always do this another day when you have less on your mind

I don't think much will get through but, we always test our new FWs.

So, I'll give you a few sites and all you'll have to do is follow their instructions.

Not a whole lot , just click on a few buttons to let the scans start.

Shields-Up by GRC.com . Ok, whatup read and follow the instructions. I gave you

the direct site ,by-passing all of the literature but you might notice that they WILL have your IP Address on the page.

Nothing to worry about . This site is one of the better sites on web. OK, they will show you how many of your ports are

opened or Stealthed. Meaning closed to all external eyes.

PcFlank.com . This site will also try and bust your FW . If you look on the

left hand side of the page , you will see more tests that you can run including a new "Leak Test"

that you can download and run to see if you are as secure as you think you are.

Ok, whatup, This should do it for now . IF you have anymore questions , I'll be around and

maybe Spirit can give us his views or other sites to test your FW.

AND ANYTIME a new Firewall is installed, best to "check it out" by using the FREE

"ShieldsUp" Test available at http://www.grc.com/default.htm . You also might want to

consider using their FREE "LeakTest" also !?

Re: found a couple of freebee's, antivirus and firewall

Hey whatup!!

OK, I just tried the "Leak Test" from Pcflank and it crashed my browser ( IE7 ) so,

don't try this one. I really don't know why but, don't try this one. Instead do the leak test

on the GRC.com site. I have done this one many times and it does not require the use of a

browser. As far as the rest of the tests , they are all OK to do , On both sites.

OK, now going to bed.

Re: found a couple of freebee's, antivirus and firewall

Hey whatup!!

OK, you had me scared for a while there!

I did mention that you had to TAKE YOUR TIME and be more vigilent.

As far as the Shields Up tests go, you did mention that you were connected to

the locale paper so, that port is used by most applications and since you are connected

to the locale intranet then, you are part of that network, hence the opened port.

The Shields Up sites mentions this fact. All of your other ports are Stealthed.Meaning

that no prying eyes would be able to see your PC.

I'm glad that Avira is working out but, did you not have to click 'OK' on the pop-up

that appeared after Avira up-dated?

The SUPERAntiSpyware will not up-date on it's own if it's the free version. You will not have the

Full Time Shields provided by SUPERAnTiSpyware either.

In order for the

Auto Up-date to function and the full time shields, you would have to Buy a one time Subscription. This would be good

for the Lifetime of the Application.

If the new FW passed the "Leak Test" from Shields Up then THAT FW is VERY secure.

I think that you have a very good set-up. As far as more testing is concerned , I don't think

anything else is warranted at this time.

What I would suggest though , is that you now run a FULL scan with both Avira and SUPERAnTiSpyware.

Start by cleaning out the temps files with this little .exe. ATF Cleaner , <!--/colorc--> by Atribune.org .

Next do a complete defrag with the defrager of your choice. (If you want suggestions then I will suggest one or two)

Once you have put things back in their place, do the scans and if anything pops up then report back with your findings.

OK whatup, that should taje care of your PC for a while.

Re: found a couple of freebee's, antivirus and firewall

:D Hi :

When it comes to the "Settings" of SUPERAntiSpyware, it is generally recommended to

uncheck the boxes of the top 2 in "StartUp Options", accessed from the "Preferences"

button on the main GUI & then the "General & StartUp" Menu ( IF using the FREE Ver

ONLY) .

I have NEVER been a "fan" of "Advanced Windows Care", especially IF "it" is the "One"

by IObit, a Chinese company. I just don't trust products made in a communist country .

"It" includes a "Registry Cleaner", which on your Win XP computer, will potentially do

more harm than good . "ATF Cleaner" is recommended by BOTH "Flash" & I .

For a very good defragmenting Utility, I recommend the FREE "Power Defragmenter

GUI 2.0...", developed by antiSPYWARE Expert "RejZor", and available at his Site at

http://www.excessive-software.eu.tt .
