Looking for an Anti-virus Application That Does Not Take Up a Lot of Resources

Morning All,

I know this topic seems to be brought up more than frequently but I did not see this question brought up. i have a laptop about 4 yrs old running windows xp sp2, with a p4 processor 2.8, and 1 gig of RAM. I have been trying to find new virus software but cannot seem to find anything that does not turn my computer into a snail. I just updated my RAM a few months back after getting rid of Norton for the same issue and am at the max. I am currently running Avast and have tried AVG and Kaspersky and they all seem to be resource hogs. With Avast after my computer boots i am at 100% resources for about 3 to 4 minutes before it finally loads completely. I really need to find something low on system resources and dont want to keep downloading new programs and deleting them when i'm not happy with them. I don't care if their pay or free i just need something that wont blow up my computer. I also downloaded online armor to use as a fire wall but have not installed it yet.

Thanks!

avast doesnt take so much . I have avast running at 256mb ram and its smooth. Which version of avast are you using ?
If i remember correctly , there is a setting for scan for rootkits on startup . Maybe that is turned ON and is troubling you. Turn it off.

Hi CaptainMorgan and welcome to the PCWorld Communities. :D

The Privacy & Security Community is loaded with examples of this exact question. It is best to look through that Community more closely. In addition to that, please take a look at the following Documents:

Using the Tiered (or Layered) Approached to Protecting Your Computer

Individual Programs ( "Layered" ) Approach to Security

Re: Looking for an Anti-virus Application That Does Not Take Up a Lot of Resources
http://forums.pcworld.com/images/emoticons/grin.gif Hi :

Avast should NOT be taking that amount of time to "load" . There have been recent

"Threads" on the Avast Support Forums on this subject ; have you looked through any of

them, like http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=37148.0 , which has a link to the earlier

http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=35172.0 !? The Rootkit Scan mentioned by

piyushsingh should be taking seconds, NOT minutes, according to those threads .

Should start by letting us know the SPECIFIC Version Number, most likely either

4.8.1201 or 4.8.1227 !? Any since you have been trying various antivirus programs,

the Question arises did you ALSO use their "Removal Tool", IF it exists, to completely

Remove the Other AV's ; this applies SPECIFICALLY to Norton !?

NOTE : IF you have the latest Avast 4.8.1227, should Definitely NOT Install the Online

Armor, which is considered a "classical" HIPS ( Host-based Intrusion Prevention System)

program, which has a long "Learning Curve" , because there are MAJOR CONFLICTING

PROBLEMS with Both programs on a computer . Instead of Online Armor, I recommend

you look into using "Defensewall" from http://www.softsphere.com IF interested in those

"Types" of programs .

P.S. To access Avast's program Settings, you RIGHT-click the blueist "a" icon, then click

"Program Settings" and go through each "Item", making your Selection .

Re: Looking for an Anti-virus Application That Does Not Take Up a Lot of Resources

I believe I am merely adding fuel to the fire, but have some additional details I would like the group to consider, regarding Security Suite vendors.

For many many years I was loyal to Symantec Norton Internet Security products. I then became quite angered by their applications' practice of telling me that issues had been resolved when in fact they had not. My eight year old DELL notebook became increasingly sluggish, and it was rather evident that Norton was playing a significant roll in this slow down. Three months ago I purchased a DELL XPS M1730 notebook, and specified that I needed Trend Micro Internet Security pre-loaded. I was finished with Norton products altogether.

Today, I am back at square one with an Internet Security Suite that uses way too much resources, and constantly gets itself "forced to stop" during security scanning, requiring me to quit and restart all components of the suite to accomplish a scan,... which originally was accomplished in less than an hour, but now takes two and one half hours. The application takes nearly fifteen menutes to load at initial system boot up of a day, and generally has caused my system to slog down to a snail's pace throughout a day's operations. I haven't seen any new issues detected in over a week, and feel that my Trend Micro application may be corrupted in some manner. Tech support has been little help,... giving me instructions to follow that do not match the screen action during the process of "obtaining" debug logs following any such pre-described incident. I am now considering acquiring another vendor's product. Either Bit Defender or Security Shield. These two products take turns appearing on, then disappearing from, comparison charts online,... while sharing top billings with reviewers at all other times.

Would someone please provide some insight to my plight of trying to determine which product is ACTUALLY the best Internet Security product for consumer use? I classify my computing skills at: Intermediate. Thank you. Kenneth Leroy Meek

Re: Looking for an Anti-virus Application That Does Not Take Up a Lot of Resources

http://forums.pcworld.com/images/emoticons/grin.gif Hi Ken :

On this Forum we do NOT favor any "Security Suite", which is implied by the 2 "Documents"

Posted in the 3rd Post of this Thread by "MPH"; have you read through either One ?

I feel most, IF not all, of the "Reviews" One sees, are de-facto Advertising. Wise NOT to

trust any of them . IF you are looking for Results done by INDEPENDENT RESEARCHERS,

I recommend you check out http://www.av-comparatives.org/ , particularly their

"Retrospective/ProActive" testing . For a FREE antiVIRUS program, most of us

recommend Avast Home Edition ( http://www.avast.com/ ) with more complete details at

http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html . IF you are willing to PAY for AV

protection, I recommend "NOD32" from Eset Software .
