Problems Connecting Four Computers to a Linksys WRT600N Router

Hi,

I just purchased the Linksys WRT600N router. So far I like it but I seem to be having some quirks with it and wondering if anyone else is having similiar problems.

To start out with I have 4 computers connect to it and switches from D-Link. Two Vista and two XP Pro computers. I have a HP L7580 printer networked through it and a Ximeta NDAS drive. Three of the computers can access the printer and drive, one of the XP computers doesn't see them. I did a clean reinstall of XP Pro on this computer about 2 weeks ago. Reinstall almost all my software and drivers. At the time I did this I was still using an old Belkin router, and was able to install the printer driver and NDAS drivers and everything worked on all computers. The following weekend I purchased the Linksys WRT600N router and swapped out the routers (I had several quirky issues during the swap out and will discuss them later). For the most part it was sorta painless. But it was at this time I decovered my one computer could not access the NDAS drive (saying its offline), but 3 other computers could. I could also still access and print from this computer. The reason I did the reinstall of the OS was I was having a problem with a windows process taking up 99% of the cpu, which caused slow down. I saw that I was having this problem again after the reinstall. I turn my attention to this problem and put the NDAS problem on the back burner. To keep things a little short, I started uninstalling drivers and software to track down what was causing this. I found it was the printer driver and contacted HP support, they were very helpful and told me what the problem was and how to fix it. I still having the problem with the NDAS drive, but I found that when I went to reinstall the HP printer drivers it could not find the printer, even with doing an IP search using the printers IP address. So, with that I know that it just isn't a problem with the NDAS drive. (I have contacted both Ximeta and Linksys, and I wasn't to impressed with their support help). Oh I have even tried turning off the firewall and anti-virus to see if that was causing the problem, didn't help.

Summary: One computer can't not see or access the NDAS drive and can not reinstall printer driver cause it does not see the printer. Three computers that are having no problems with this. Hoping someone can help me with this.

Now for the quirks I've noticed with the WRT600N. During the swap from the old router to the new, I had problems of accessing internet and other functions. To resolve them almost everytime I had to power reset the modem, new router, and computers to regain accesses (in that order). My old router I didn't seem to have to do this. If I had to reset the modem for some reason the old router picked up the new modem (service provider) IP address along with the computer. Only once in awhile would I have to reset the old router. When I swapped in the Linksys WRT600N router I used Linksys first setup software to set the router up. It seemed to go well, except for access once it was down. This is when I ran into having to do the power resets on the modem, router and computers. Thats one quirk, quirk 2 was the first time I power reset the router, all the setup I did using using Linksys setup software were gone (like the router reset to default settings). Not suppose to do this, only when you press and hold the reset button for 10secs). So had to manual re-setup the router and play the power reset with the modem, router and computers once again. So once that was all done and everything seemed to be working (except the above problem with one of my computers). I then started working on some more advanced settings of the router. I was like turning off the DHCP and setting up IP address for computers and changing the routers default IP address. When I tried to adjust these setting I would loose access to the routers setup pages. For example, last night I changed the the number of IP addresses the router will give out from 50 to 7, Now I can't access the routers setup page again. Routers IP address is still the same but when I type it into the web browers it doesn't come up (just get a standard blank IE page). I'm afraid I may have to do the router default reset to get access again which means having to re-setup the router once again. But first I'm gonna try to just the power reset of the router (but this means I may have to do a power reset of the modem, then router, then computers.... this is one of the quirks...)

I'm hoping someone can tell me if I'm doing something wrong or work arounds for these issues I'm having. Oh the router does have the lastest firmware according to their website. And I believe the routers version is 1.1.

Linksys WRT600N v1.1 with firmware version 1.01.36 build 3 dated 12/14/2007 (website has a released date of Feb 08)

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanx

Roger

OK, I understand that you have a printer, an NDAS, and 4 computers; 2 Vista and 2XP for a total of 6 devices attached to the router and you mentioned a switch.

1. Why were you moving from the Belkin (which I assume was 802.11G) to the Linksys?

2. How are the computers connected to the router? Most especially the one that won't connect.

3. How is the printer attached to the router?

4. Why are you turning off the DHCP? It is best left on. Once the device is set up by the router, the router will not change the address, even if the device is turned off for an extended amount of time.

5. I will assume that the NAS is directly connected to the router via ethernet cable, hence the NDAS.

While I have not gone to the Linksys website to check the manual, if you are attempting to power reset the router, for Linksys, this is generally done by unplugging the power, not by pressing the small reset button for that resets the settings to default. (Unless they have changed the hardware in the past few years, I have a WRT-54GS with two wired desktops, NDAS, 2 wired printers, wireless printer, 1 wireless desktop and 2 wireless laptops) I am also running a mix of Vista and XP computers.

Yes, you are absolutely right, if you unplug the router power, it is not supposed to lose the settings. That is a defect in my mind. I have unplugged mine, trasported it to another location and plugged it in the next day, used it there over a weekend, and then unplugged it again, transported back home and set back up. I have done this 3 times in the last 18 months and it has never lost it's setting. (I did this to use a computer and printer that are connected through the router without disturbing their settings). If yours in losing the setting, contact Linksys about that.

You may want to try using the 192.168.1.1 access to the router through your browser rather than the software. The CD that came with mine was defective, so I have been using that by default ever since. Just type that URL in your browser address window and hit enter.

Read through your User's Guide, your Network Address Server Settings should be at DHCP, then when you attach a device the router assigns the number. It will start at 192.168.1.100 and set upward. This is separate from your network address which is covered by the Internet Connection Type setting. These are covered in Chapter 3, the Internet Connection Type on p5 and the Network Address Server Settings on p7. (I downloaded the manual).

Re: Problems Connecting Four Computers to a Linksys WRT600N Router

Some other things to try...

Have you tried plugging the computer that is NOT working into a different port on the router or one of the switches? Maybe it is a bad port on the router.

Have you tried disconnecting ALL other devices EXCEPT the one computer that is NOT working?

I agree with rgreen4...powering off the router should NOT kill any settings. If it is doing that on a regular basis, then I would hazzard a guess that something is wrong with the router. Generally, speaking you should not need to reset the router to get settings to stick either...routers are generally designed to "soft reset" when you change settings, so you should not need to do it...BUT sometimes they do get "stuck" and a power reset will "unstick them"...it is kind of like kicking or hitting some mechanical device that sticks.

I will also note that generally speaking, if you reset the router or modem and router, you will also need to reboot the computer. Most of the time, if Windows loses the IP connection, it needs a reboot to re-establish it. I find this more true with Windows than with Macs, but find it true with both at least some of the time. Generally speaking, if you have network problems, the first "problem solving technique" is to power down EVERYTHING (modem, routers, and computers...and swtiches if you have them)...let them sit for about 30 sec to a minute and then power them back...thinking about smashing them with a sledge hammer is optional, but I have found it works if you truly, honestly think about that urge...computers can detect such thoughts and generally behave better when they do. ;)
