Will I be better off buying a MacBook or a Sony Vaio TZ series (U7500)?

I want to get a new laptop and have narrowed the field to these two computers. Now I'm stuck and don't know which way to go. I think with the Photoshop software the Vaio will let me do what I want to with photos, but I like the Mac's fully integrated software. While I can see either one being a good choice, I also feel like one is better than the other and I'm just missing seeing how.

My primary goals for this are photo storage and editing, web surfing, basic gaming, word processing and such. I'm not concerned with Vista or no because I have to learn it anyway to help my mom with her computer. I haven't used a Mac in a very long time so I'd have a steep learning curve there.

Can anyone help?

Hey ophelia!!

Our expert on the Macs might chime in but in the meantime i will try explain a little.

It seems like you are not sure about the Mac. Well, if you are to use this notebook primarily

for photo editing and word processing then the Mac would probably be your best bet.

On the other hand , if you want to play games and be able to compatibly integrate your work

with others on different platforms then the choice would be the Sony.

OR , you could go with the Mac , buy a copy of Vista and install it in BootCamp.

A special partition on a Mac that will let you run both platforms on the same notebook.

This way you get the best of both worlds. You would have to boot in one or the other of the OS' to

do whatever work you want to do.This way you get compatibility and speed.

I think that the best advice I can give you is to ask this same question in our sister publication

"MacWorld" . there you will find all the answers pertaining to Macs.

MacWorld Community .

I hope this will help .

if you want to save some money and get similar perfomance, get a dell inspiron 1501 or 1525. Go Amd dual core, or intel centrino duo with 1-2 gb of ram.

if you want extended battery life go with xp pro. Vista is a contradiction to long battery life

tests with 1501 and 9 cell battery-

xp- 6 hours

vista- 3 hours

Caps lock, not necessary all the time.

The key item that jumps out to me is the part I highlighted in red...depends on what you mean by basic gaming. As much as I like Macs, the reality is that if you have serious level of desire to game (either hardcore gaming such as bleeding edge first person shooters like Crysis or you just want a wider variety in general), then you are better off going with a Windows computer. Granted you can run Bootcamp on a Mac and thus get Windows on your Mac which will work fine with gaming (this ignores the fact that a MacBook is not really "beefy" enough for graphically intensive games...for that, you would want a MacBook Pro instead)., but it is cheaper and easier to just get a Windows laptop if gaming is a priority.

The other functions you listed are fine on either a Mac or a Windows PC. Photoshop works just fine on Windows. Granted, a Mac does come with more integrated software for consumer level photo stuff than many Windows computers, but if you are going to the level of Photoshop, then that type of stuff does NOT come with Macs by default...it is an extra purchase on a Mac just like on a Windows PC.

Personally, I would take the Mac...but then you are NOT me. :) I would suggest putting hands on both, if possible, and see how you actually like working with both of them. Based upon your post, I would guess that you will likely be happier quicker with the Sony, but you might like the Mac better eventually if you get past "the learning curve". But, the reality is that I cannot know how you will like either. Only YOU will know that.
