IE 6 SP2 - once on internet site, cannot go to another site

I am an onsite tech and one of my users has a problem of which I've never seen. We are on a LAN and he can get to the internet, for example the homepage is their intranet site, he types in i.e., http://www.google.com/ and it will bring up that site but when he tries to go to another site by typing in (or selects from favorites) another site, i.e., http://www.yahoo.com/, then presses "GO" or return (any number to attempts), it just sits there. It doesn't try to go to the site, no error page comes up, it just sits there with the typed in path, but still on the internet site (as above example, Google).

Has anyone got an explanation(s) and/or a possible solution(s) to this problem? Any help would be great.

Just FYI, the desktop was reimaged last Friday with one of the customer's standard images. The user worked on his desktop up until Tuesday morning and then the problem started. He did install additional software but only the customer's proprietary software (and all apps are installed on a vast number of units internationally). If the user logs onto his laptop or another user's desktop/laptop, he doesn't have any problem getting out to various internet sites.
