Hi Jimmy and welcome to the PCWorld Communities. :D

First, I have changed your Discussion title to give a clearer indication of your question. For future reference, please be as descriptive as possible in both the heading of your Discussion as well as the post itself.

Now, I hate to say this but the pop up you see is the actual virus. I am not sure how it started; however, I do know that it travels through email contacts. So, as a proactive step, you may want to contact everyone in your email contact list and warn them of what you have.

As for you situation, there are several individuals within this Community that specialize in issues related to viruses or spyware. Please be patient and allow them a chance to see your Discussion and provide suggestions.

Hi Jimmy and welcome to the forum. You might want to take a look at this and see if it helps. coastie65 http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/malware-removal/remove-xp-antivirus-2008-2009 I would also recommend getting some protection. I don't what if any security apps you are running, but there are some goood free stuff out there, such as Avast! anti Virus and SUPERantispyware for spyware and such.

Re: Infected with the AntiVirus XP Virus
http://forums.pcworld.com/images/emoticons/grin.gif Hi Jimmy :

Sounds like you have what the Malware-fighting "community" calls a "Rogue"
program !? Best to start, and hopefully end, with running a "Full Scan" of the
FREE "MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware", best downloaded from
www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php ; just click the green "Download" button to start
the "process" . After Installation, make sure you "Update" it PRIOR to running
its "Full Scan" .

People get this because there are security "holes" on their computer and as Coastie

shared IF you are interested in us checking for possible "holes", you would need to

start by sharing the SPECIFIC Name(s) of the security programs currently on your

computer !? Should also tell us the SPECIFIC Name of your Operating System .

Re: Infected with the AntiVirus XP Virus

Hi Jimmy,

What you're talking about is a Phishing Scam Ad. It happened to me a few months ago when I was visiting another website, and this ad pops up telling me that my computer is vulnerable to attack and to download the thing. Meanwhile they show a progress bar of the scan already taking place.

I was totally freaked out, but I managed to get out of there right away without clicking on their ad.

It's a Phishing Scam to scare you into purchasing their program and get your information right along with it. It's called the XP AntiVirus. Whatever you do, do not buy into their Scam.

Here's a Snip that I managed to take when it happened to me.

Re: Infected with the AntiVirus XP Virus
That is another one I missed. All I get is an occassional letter from a grieving Nigerian Widow, some other person looking to transfer funds from one place or the other. I quit reporting the things. I've also won Numerous lotteries as well. :^0 The whole thing is laughable in my opinion, but probably not to those who bought into it. I am also not plagued by pop ups, porn or otherwise. I HAVE run into a Virus infected web site while surfing, but was alerted and did a scan to make sure I hadn't gotten infected ( I didn't). Sometimes I feel like I'm missing out on something, but that's Ok. coastie
