File Recovery

Please help!!!!http://club.cdfreaks.com/images/smilies/6/sad.gif!
While I was setting up Windows on my PC, I made a mistake and formatted the drive D instead of C and installed Windows there.
I had lots of great collections of music in that drive. I had been gathering those files from different sources and for a long time and now I want
them back. What should I do? Where can I get a free and powerful file recovery program? Please guide me.
Thanks in advance.

Re: File Recovery
As the term is "Backup, backup, backup." Once you have reformatted a hard drive, recovering files will be really really difficult. Your best option would be to pull out a disk that has your latest backup, but it seems like you are requesting help in recovering your files and you haven't backed up your files.

Please provide the OS you are running. If we are to recommend ANY file recovering software, the Operating System version would be essential in helping. Please be advised that if we find a recovery program for you, your files may still not be recoverable.

Re: File Recovery

also we wud like to know how you formateed the drive, did you use any 3 rd party tools to do that?

Was that a quick format or full format, if its full , then its probably impossible to recover.

Hi Techie. That's my line... LOL :D

Anyway, hi Mori and welcome to the PCWorld Communities. As Techie and Piyush have stated, data recovery on a formatted drive is next to impossible. However, as another member of the forum stated, there is one application that can at least show you whether or not a recovery is possible.

Data Rescue has a two part system for verifying whether or not a data recovery would be possible. You can download the free version by clicking on the hyperlink in the previous sentence. With the free version, the application will verify if a data recovery is possible. If a data recovery is possible, you would have to buy the full version at $99.

Now, as Techie implied, you can never have too many backup options. I have five backup options. If something like this happens to me, all I will lose is one of my backups...and suffer a bit of frustration.

Re: File Recovery
PC Inspector File Recovery can often recover data from reformatted drives, although the data that it recovers may be damaged or unusable. It's a free program. I found it from a PC World article, "The Best Free Software," under "Triage Time" in "Tame Windows."
