A WORD FOR ANY POTENTIAL 80 Gb PS3 BUYERS

i just bought a PS3 80 Gb console. I had a PS2 that the drive belt broke on. The general consensus was that the 80 Gb was backwards compatible with the PS2 and is . Sometime ago I read that Sony was going to rerelease the 80 Gb PS3 in Asia, but that there were no plans to release it elsewhere. I was at gamestop about 3 weeks ago and was told that they had some 80 GB in stock ( The Metal Storm 4 version ; I think) ). Then about a week or so ago Best buy advertised An 80 Gb PS3 and they had at least 6 in each store. Both places were the standard $499.99. The one I got at Walmart was $399.99 ( same as the 40 Gb.) It WILL NOT play PS2 games as it is not backwards compatible, although you CAN use a memory card adapter and download your PS2 files to the HDD which doesn't make a lot of sense. I'm of a mind that this is a new generation of 80 Gb PS3 ( 40 Gb upgraded with an 80 Gb HDD) and thus no backwards compatibility with the PS2. My guess is, if you can find the Metalstorm 4 edition of the PS3 at $499.99, that may well be backwards compatible. Coastie65

Hi piyush, I ordered Assassin's Creed and Uncharted, after I found I couldn't play my PS2 games as well as an HDMI cable. coastie

You will definitely love assassins creed . I m not aware of Uncharted. I just did a search, its a PS3 only game. Ratings and screenshots were looking good.
I m looking forward to crysis warhead and far cry2. Both FPS.

The demo of Crysis was Ok, but about as much as I wanted as far as an FPS game went. Unlike my nephew, I am not that big of fan of FPS stuff. Uncharted is a Lara Croft Tomb Raider type of thing. I got it for my nephew last Christmas. They will be releasing Final Fantasy VIII for the PS3 as well. There looks to be some pretty good stuff coming up. I won't get Oblivion as I already have it installed in here. They are coming out with a Tomb Raider title as well for the PS3. I ordered the HDMI cable to take advantage of any HD properties that may be in the games as well as BluRay disks. The controller is either wired (USB) or wireless. In wireless mode, you have to recharge it from time to time ( a rechargeable Lithium Battery that will eventually have to be changed). At $60 USD per game, I'll probably be buying fewer games than I did for the PS2, unless I find some good used titles. I started to get Assassin's Creed for the PC, but am glad I waited. At least I'll have something to play on that thing. I may look into Prince Of Persia as well.

Looks like you have also been waiting for some good titles to come. The next tomb raider - Underworld should come in Nov 2008. Crysis warhead will be there in next week. Since i enjoyed crysis as an FPS guy , warhead is a must for me. Its not a sequel but a parallel.

btw - you must have heard about SPORE. The game that is in news these days - totally different from every other game. They have a free creature creator at their website. I m trying this to see what it is. If you also want to try, the link is this - http://www.spore.com/trial . Its only 205MB. that will take about 2 hrs for me but i guess a few minutes for you.

Hi piyush, The Assassin's Creed game I ordered is on BluRay Ought to be interesting. Sure glad I ordered the HDMI cable as I forgot to get one. When Iwas looking for the games, most of the good stuff was preorder as they haven't ben released yet. Looks like there will be a major release of games between now and the Christmas Holiday in December. They just had a thing about Spore release on TV. Not sure if that thing is my cup of tea or not. I saw the Tomb Raider Game and will most likely get it. They are also releasing FFVIII. I hope that is a sign that they will be releasing more of the FF titles to the PS3. I was disappointed that it wasn't backwards compatible with hte PS2, although as I said, you can save PS2 files to the HDD using a memory card adapter, which doesn't make a lot of sense. maybe they'll correct that at some point with a firmware release. I'm going to have to get about a 25' Cat 5 Ethernet cable to run to my router from the PS3 as it across the room from the computer.

Just drooped the cables that came with that thing and used HDMI. Actually that thing upconverts better that the Samsung I have. I guess I'll have to get the dedicated remote for that as far as movies go as it will be less cumbersome. Still haven't gotten any games. I did order two as previously mentioned. I know they have some good titles coming for the Holidays though, so we'll see what shakes out.

costie I told you that some of the new 80s wher not going to have p2 backwords support but try playing a ps one game on it. There is talk of a firm are patch to fix the backwords problem. you might want to see if you can pick up motorstorm used I got it for my friends kid for 10 bucks its a fun racing game even if its only 720p

Yeah, The article I read sometime back said that Sony was only planning to release those new 's in Asia and they had no plans for release in the US or elsewhere. GameStop have some Metal sorm 4 editions for $499.99, that I think ere backwards compatible with the PS2. The one I got was $399.99 ( the same price as the 40Gb). When I mentioned it, the girl said she thought it was a replacement for the 40 Gb and thus the price. I guess they just changed out the HDD in the 40 Gb. I haven't heard any thing about the firmware update, but it still have my PS2 games and memory cards. I just got back from WalMart where I got one game ( Dark Kingdom) and a remote, as the game controller is a bit cumbersome for movie work. I am either going to have to find a 25' ethernet cable or some way else to do updates as the PS3 is on one side of the room and the computer & router on the other side.

don't for get that the ps3 has wifi right out of the box. if you lived closer i you could pick up a cust made cable i got over 1000 ft of cat 5e

I can go wireless with the router. I have up to 4 connections. The computer is hard wired and that leaves three more openings. I can also use a USB flash drive as well to transfer the files. Right now it isn't all that high on my to do list, as I'm dealing ith some issues in this thing. I can do a scandisk, but it would do no good as I don't have any repair files in here. I guess I'll have to use the installation disk and do a repair and replace the missing stuff then I can start on some other issues. Nothing major, just nuisance stuff, that has been adding up over time time.
