Firefox and Internet Explorer not showing some content webpages and not allowing some options on said pages when clicked on?

Heilsa!

Firefox and Internet Explorer will not show certain content on some webpages and won't allow certain options to be used on them either. It has something to do with his browsers and his PC as they show up on mine and let me use them and the same on the PC at his work, he can access the options there and see all content on said pages too.

I will explain further, he is on a legit singles site, not some pervert site, its called tagged. He can't see some of the content on its pages or access his messages, they show up but won't open and can't use other options either etc... Now I tried to log in here at PC World awhile back a few days in a row from same said PC and it wouldn't let any of those times.

I have looked at the options on Firefox and the Internet Options in Windows and I can't see anything that would stop this. He just recently installed CA antivrus package and I installed SuperAntiSpyware and updated it and ran a scan and Super found about 900 and something infections worms, trojans, adware, some harmless cookies and others. I removed all of them with Super. Now, I have cleaned the internet temporary files and windows temp. files with ATF Cleaner and it still does the samething.

Alot of those trojans and worms, viruses etc... like to hit the browsers don't they? He uninstalled Firefox and I just reinstalled it today and upgraded it to 2.1.17 I think it was and it is still doing the samething. Could it be the CA antivirus blocking some content and options and or could some addon or plugin be doing this? Or is it some activex control or some corrupted activex control or something? I've tried everything that I can think of for now and I can't figure it out. Does anyone know what is going on here? Does anyone have any suggestions to try and solve this situation?

Hi Jammer, The only thing that comes to mind is the content setting in internet options as it could be set to be too restrictive. coastie65

The individuals PC in question is running WindowsXp. I checked the settings in internet options, security, and privacy, didn't see anything in content to really change other than the ratings. I set the tagged site to be accepted. It still did not respond like it should. He was having problems with his Flash setup so I reinstalled that and it still did nothing different. The situation has me a stumped for now. I am prone to think that one of those worms, trojans and or viruses he had on it did something to his PC. Some registry setting that it not allowing this or something I am just grasping at straws here. Thanks for the input though.

Heilsa......With that many ....many...WORMS.......VIRUSes..... I say...Its time to refomat the HDD and do a clean install WDs and IE/FF...browsers.

Yes, I agree! A format and reinstallation is the key here. But he said he has done that a couple of times and doesn't want to do that again. I don't think he did it correctly either myself. I will push it again. I think with all of that stuff Super found and got rid of he has several problems etc... I am trying to get him to format and reinstall just for the identity theft concern if nothing else. He even had a whole other user account setup on this PC and didn't know who did it, how or when it got setup. All of the sudden he was being asked for a password confirmation to log on. So I started looking and found that someone or something had setup another account and just recently too, on this PC. I got rid of it too. He said he didn't do that.

Anyway, I think he just doesn't want the down time or he would be game to do a format, reinstall. It really doesn't take all that long if you have all the drivers etc.. I think he still has all of his drivers and other stuff needed for a format and reinstall on CDs that HP gave him when he bought said PC. I will try and talk him into it even if I have to stay up all day, night and day doing it so as to relieve some of the down time that he would encure in the process. Wouldn't do that accept he is a neighbor and a very good friend. But I doubt he will go for it. Thank you again!

Hi :

I am willing to look at the latest "log" of SUPERAntiSpyware ( minus the "adware/tracking

cookies" ) to see IF I spot anything that may need the use of an "advanced diagnostic"

program for additional "cleansing" . I hope this is not the person who had the CAD

problem !? Since they recently installed CA antivirus you did not mention the name of the

previous AV and IF any existing "Removal Tool" was used !?

Spiritwind, I am glad you happened along as we have decided to just do a format and reinstalation of WindowsXp on said PC. An HP Pavilion 533w. Yes this is the same PC that had the Net Framework and CAD installation problems. But I had ran a scan with SuperAntispyware and it only found one infection and some cookies. But after I got the Net. Framework and CAD to install he ran a scan with Super and it came up with over 900 infections. Worms, Trojans, viruses, cookies etc... And I removed everything with Super.

Well it is still doing some weird stuff now with the browsers and we just installed two new memory modules of which made it 2Gbs in RAM memory and is still just a tad bit faster than it was, in other words it is really slow.

I am in need of your help. He is going to get a Terabyte external HD and we want to put all of the stuff he wants to keep, on it. Then format the two drives he has already on it. One that came with the HP and one he added, besides the new Terabyte that he is getting.

What I need to do is make sure, ABSOLUTELY sure, that there are NO infections on this PC before I transfer the stuff he wants onto that Terabyte HD.* Can you help me do this?* I will start another thread to do this. Where and or what section should I post it in?

He has CA antivirus on it I am going to do a full scan with it and see what it finds and does. It has SuperAntispyware on it too. After the CA scan I will update and run Super and see what it finds. Should I install and use other stuff like Spybot S&D, SpywareBlaster,
Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, Ewido etc... What combination should be used here to ensure no infections transfer over to that new HD?

It also has HiJackthis on it too. I have Panda antirootkit and RougeRemover on CD I can put on it too if needed.

Can you and are you willing to help out in this matter? It will be greatly appreciated! I will mark this thread as answered and pass out points after I find out where to post the one that needs to be posted concerning the above mentioned needs.

I do NOT have the skills to make sure your friend's computer is COMPLETELY free of ALL

"Infections", but am willing, somewhat, to do my best in an "Evaluation" of the "Situation" .

IF you want to pursue this based on what I just said, then Start a Thread where Coastie

recommended and Post that SUPERAntiSpyware log I previously requested, PLUS install,

Heilsa!

I will post the issues concerning the virus problems in the correct section. I am running a complete scan with Superantispyware right now. I will post the log from it and the unistall log from Hijackthis in the other thread that I start. I will install Malwarebytes Antimalware and post its log after, update and run full scan. I did not update the programs and or use decrapifier like you suggested as getting to this machine when I have the time was not really working out to well as he stays on it when he gets home and I didn't want to bother him as he works all day. And I have had stuff to do during the day. But now that several things are going wrong that will change probably and I have some time during the days.

There are a number of problems going on with this PC like today I went to write to a CD with his CDROMs and they both don't work now. Well, they will read but not write to disc. We'll take care of that though when we format. I tried everything device manager says their working correctly no yellow marks etc... Something is going on. We uninstalled Roxio the other day so I thought that that might have been the reason so I did a restore back to that time and even to a couple of days prior and they still wouldn't work. So I restored it back to today.

I need to get this PC as clean as we can, things have changed a little, so as to transfer data to his extra hard drive that he has on his PC right now and then later to an Terabyte HD. He wants to take and transfer all of his stuff like "My Documents" folder over to his extra drive then take it out do the format and reinstall and then put it back in. That can be done can't it? What I mean is, it won't format the HD that we took out with all of his info. on and reinstall, after we format and reinstall windows will it? It will just format what I tell it too, right? Anyway, getting off subject I will post the security issues in the other thread and lets take care of them first.

Heilsa!

Well, I am posting the answer to this question so that others might know what was doing this and take heed to its resolution for themselves if or when they run accross it.

It turned out that it was not Firefox and or Internet Explorer that wouldn't let me log on to PC World and or let him see certain content on different sites at all it was the individuals CA Firewall in his free CA security suite provided by Road Runner ISP. I just recently formatted the HDD on this machine and reinstalled WindowsXp on it. Then I logged in to PC World fine and he could access the sites regularly without this CA. Then after I installed the CA it wouldn't let us do the aforementioned. It turned off the CA firewall and we were able to access the sites again.

So I turned the CA Firewall back on and it wouldn't let us access these sites again or sign in to PC World. I adjusted all of the settings that I could or felt comfortable messing with and it still wouldn't cooperate without being set to being fully unprotected.

So I uninstalled CA completely and installed ZoneAlarm Firewall, Avast Antivirus and SuperAntiSpyware and everything is A OK! Hail Freeware! Anyway, if someone knows what settings I was suppose to use with this CA that would allow access to more or less secure sites I would greatly appreciate it if you would let me know what those are or what to add and or delete in CA's settings.

Not that we will ever, either one of us use CA again, but just to have that knowledge in case someone else is in need of help concerning this same situation. Thank you all for your much needed help!

What was happening is CA was blocking some of the java script in those web pages, look in CA and see if there are settings to do with java or script.

Hi Jammer. Interesting. I had a problem with that sometime back ( about 2 years). I was using the Windows Firewall in XP and the Router had a built in Firewall as well. I then added McAfee's Firewall and I was cutoff from the internet. As soon as I uninstalled the McAfee Firewall, I was back in business. The bottom line was that I was over Firewalled. coastie
