http://forums.pcworld.com/images/emoticons/grin.gif Hi :

I have never heard of a program called "Cyber Defence" & a Search using Google reveals

no such program ; to best help you need to provide the EXACT spelling of the software .

Since there is a lot of what the malware-fighting "community" calls "Rogue" programs

"infecting" people, I will guess that is what you MAY have and recommend you use the

FREE Version of Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, available from

http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php . The more SPECIFIC Info you provide, including

the Name of your Operating System, the better we can possibly help .

If you have this problem and are also having problems installing SP2, it sounds like it may be time to back up all your data, reformat, and re-install XP, upgrade to SP2 and then install all your programs, and restore your data.

I seem to remember that cyberDefender was in some kind of Rogue list, a while back, but I don't know if it has been de-listed.

I would suggest you follow SpiritWind's recommendation and download MalwarebytesAntiMalware program, (it's a free, standalone, easy to use program) then post the resulting log in here.

If you're also having problems with XP SP2, then I would suggest you start another thread within the Windows forum, that way more people will be aware of your problem and you might get more reponses within that forum.

Also, please provide as much info as you can about your computer, OS, etc.

Hi Barb, To be honest, I'm not a big fan of those optimizer / registry utilities as they can do more harm than good. As far as a reformat and reinstall goes, if you have your stuff backed up somewhere such as a disk or another HDD, then go ahead. I have a feeling that the registry is messed up and may require it anyway. coastie65

http://forums.pcworld.com/images/emoticons/grin.gif Hi :

Why are you trying to use "Registry Optimizer" ? These kinds of programs are generally

considered "registry cleaners" which can do a lot more harm than the minimum benefit

they possibly will do . One of the best Possibilities to remove "CyberDefender", which is

considered a borderline "Rogue" product, is to use the FREE "Rogue Remover", available

from http://www.malwarebytes.org/rogueremover.php . IF that program fails to complete

the removal, I then recommend you use the FREE "Revo Uninstaller", available from

http://www.revouninstaller.com/ . For a Starting List of reliable, trustworthy security

programs, read what I wrote at http://forums.pcworld.com/docs/DOC-1141 .

Hey Barb, I would try the Malwarebytes link that spritwind suggested before going to the extreme of a reformat and reinstall. It is a very good utility and I have used in the past sucessfully, for that kind of stuff and it is FREE. coastie

I'm surprised that no one suggested startup your computer in 'safe' mode (resart>immediately start tapping the F8 key until you get a screen with choices for booting>choose 'safe mode')--then run the uninstaller

I also agree, Format and reload Windows is the only way to go, but I would take it one step further. The computer is six years old, and the HDD is at the end, so I say get a new one Seagate or Western Digital 160Gb. Upgrade the Memory to max 512Mb. One screw holds the HDD, slide the old one out put the new one in, boot-up with the Windows Disc Format and load Windows. Install Drivers if needed, put the old HDD in a USB Enclosure and transfer your old Data to the new HDD. 1-2-3 and you are up and running, the old computer is as good as new, if not better.

Hey tman, That's why it is always good to have a bunch of people cruising around here. :D Keeps the rest of us honest. I usually do most of that kind of stuff in safe mode and I missed bring it up. :p coastie
