McAfee update popup

About 3 months ago, my subcription from McAfee's SecurityCenter Internet/Virus ran out. I still want to use the old product to occasionally scan my system. Now everytime I am logon an annoying popup from McAfee asking to renew or later. Is there away to get stopping or getting rid of this popup without renewing my subcription or uninstalling the software? The popup just gives two options "Update my programs now." or Update my programs later".

Your help would be helpful

Paul

Hi and welcome to the forums. Short of Uninstalling the thing , I can think of no way the stop the nuisance. What are you using for an anti virus ? For just an occasional scan of your system You can download and install malwarebytes excellent program at www.malwarebytes.org. It is FREE and it will not bother you for an up date. You can choose to do so when you wish. coastie65

Re: McAfee update popup

http://forums.pcworld.com/images/emoticons/grin.gif Hi :

McAfee is not going to let you use their software unless you agree to buy it . Since there

are FREE and good Alternatives available, a Good "Starter Guide" would be what I wrote

at http://forums.pcworld.com/docs/DOC-1141 . Since you appear to have no "active"

security currently on your computer, there is a likelyhood your computer has been

"infected", so some Choices should hopefully made soon . AFTER you have downloaded

a "replacement" antiVIRUS program, you would uninstall McAfee, INCLUDING the use of

their "Removal Tool", which I would provide a link to IF interested !?

For now, starting with Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, as suggested by "coastie65" would be

a very wise thing to do .

Re: McAfee update popup

Hi Paul, and welcome to PCWorld Community.

I agree with Coastie. Once your AntiVirus software subscription runs out, they encourage you loudly and often to renew it. However, if you do not want to renew, the Malwarebytes AntiMalware program he suggests, is an excellent FREE option. I think that most of the regular members here would agree on that.

And if you want to have an excellent FREE Antispyware program, check out SUPERAntiSpyware

I would also recommend Avast! as one of the best in the market. And it's also FREE.

I have the MBAM and SAS on my computer, and I'll be installing Avast! as soon as my Trend MicroAV subscription runs out in a couple of months.
