A USB plug hardware key would be an ideal way to prevent "casual piracy". This type of piracy is what all the elaborate activation and WGA is intended to prevent. The real hardcore hackers will crack just about anything...regardless of the protection schemes.

I agree Bill Gates can keep putting up walls but the hackers of the world will find away around them. So he might as well wave a white flag call it a day and make windows free he's got enough money for now.:)

LOL!!
Microsoft thinks that cracking is something that occurs overnight and it is not really such a big issue. I really agree with jcurrin when he said,"just raise the white flag microsoft"! Hacking and Cracking has been around since the ages of software has made difference to the computer! Regardless, of what you do there will be someone leaking the serails out for a price. Do you realize that most hacking attempts or accomplishments occur with the workplace! 80 percent to be exact! If you are not treating the employees like they should be treated, than it becomes a vulnerablitiy! Microsoft is trying to awake a sleeping giant! Lots of crackers and hackers do not really focus upon Microsoft product for the reason it is reatively easy to crack. If microsoft keeps up the issues about illegal usuage of windows and the piracy issues that is currently available than they will witness the software become free publically! Hackers and Crackers have not even attempted to crack the iceburg! :D:lol::::::!:

I agree that whatever wall microsoft make, a hacker will always find a way around it.

But thinking of the number of people outhere who using pirated software without knowing about it, i think this is a fair effort. I'm live in a developing country where most computer user only know pirated software and whoever tries to sell legitamate software will dies due to the extra cost. I guess it is good at least to let user that they using pirated software.

Haha!
Yup, let MIcrosoft do what they feel will protect their software from piracy. The harder they try, the harder hackers will try to crack the software. It won't take long for a hacker to bypass this new protection Microsoft pleas will prevent from pirated software. GOOD LUCK GATES

It is already possible to buy Vista and Office 2007 made in China (original Box) in Pakistan for about $10. Practically all other newest PC programs to. Usually they are on Pakistan market, before they are on American market (especially Microsoft products).

I think the major reason people try to hack is to see IF it can be done. Unfortunately some people take that power too far and it makess it more difficult for everyone else. If Microsoft makes lemonade out of lemons and sees that if it allows people to hack their software but fixes the issue it might just be more secure from the pro's. Not saying nothing isn't hackable but they can certainly improve it a bit.

Bill Gate Jokes
Just FYI, I dont think Bill Gates works at Microsoft anymore, didn't he retire a few months ago? The jokes are starting to look silly now that he does not work there.

Laugh all you want...
We pay more for legitimate copies of software products that we want due to pirated software. Microsoft may charge to much and impose to many restrictions but they don't make you buy their software. They are a legitimate compnay trying to make a buck. Besides, look at all the good that Gates is doing with the money we've given him over the years.

Microsoft OS cost so much... no wonder people PIRATE.
Ya know what Microsoft, here's a slap in your company's face: Maybe if your software didn't cost so much, PEOPLE WOULDN'T THINK ABOUT PIRACY IN THE FIRST PLACE. How much does a standard version of Microsoft Office cost you these days? OVER $300. I would have already found another route and gone to Openoffice.org because it's free and some people CAN'T afford to pay the money for their own license. But were talking Windows here and not Microsoft office... still, the topic haunts many.

The Truth...
The truth is, Microsoft will never go out of business, their are too many companies that keep them going, including all of the pc makers, HP, Dell, Gateway etc. Their are only two companies that sell personal computers that do not ship with Windows, Apple which ships with OS X, but still can run windows, and Sun, which ships with Linux with the option of windows. Plus there are so many legit organizations that use Windows legally, government, heath care and public schooling. Even if Microsoft were to get close to failing, that would mean Apple would have more of the market share, and Apple would pull Microsoft back in, like Microsoft did for Apple a while back, because no one company can have all the market share, the government would split them up. I would like to see Apple have the majority of the market share, but the truth is, we will always need Microsoft, they are a big impact on the economy for all the jobs they create, first second and third hand software and hardware business. Though Microsoft is considered the very hackable junk but formal OS, there will always be a price.

I hope the people that represent Microsoft will read my post.

Take an example of a simple program that needs a serial number to work. To the program, there is only one registerd serial number that will work. A cracker uses a HEX-Editor to crack the program so it doesn't need a key. Failure to the company. It works.

This is just like what your doing. Cracks are going to be made and are going to exist no matter what, you can't make software uncrackable. There are activation cracks, you dont' have to enter a serial number, it's optionally in Vista so then you can have it cracked once your on the system. We all know about your update that blocks RC1 and RC2 files from being used, well, it can easily be disabled from downloading that update or removed (although not as easily). That is the spiel today, it can't be stopped. Even if you were to have people from Microsoft come to the user's home and check their key in a database, it would just get cracked either way. That's 1000 char, Bye
