help,voip and satellite broadband

I'm a real neophyte and I am trying to find out if it is possible to use a voip plan with my satellite internet? I've tried calling my server (Hughesnet) and have been unable to either connect with some I could understand or new anything about it. is this possible? Thanks for any help you might be able to provide.

latency on sattelite is really long, so if you like waiting...

and idk how much bandwidth is needed for voip but it will probably be about 56k (upstream)
