Help. Lost my program to read in pdf

I must have accidently wiped out my program that would bring up files in the pdf format. For ex; to view a specific document, before it would come right up and I had the choice to size it, read, print and what pages. Simple simple program. The www./ --------.showpdf.asp., will not load. I emailed Adobe for help and they suggested I download Adobe reader 9 but this is not a free program. I read that acrobat.com is a free service and this must have been what I had before but not all this other reader 9 and Adobe air, etc.. It comes up now as a black screen. Before it would come up with no problem everytime. I am not familiar with some of the programs I had and have. If they worked for my purpose, I just left them alone and didn't pay attention to the exact program name. The icon I had before was red with the white acrobat insigna. Now it's a white icon with light red insigna. I'm sure it's not the same program. Can anyone try and make out what I'm saying or asking for, and let me know what pdf web based program I had before and how I can get it back. Adobe website is way too big for me and has so many programs, addons, etc.. that it's hard to find the simple in it. Using Win. XP w/ IE 7.0 Thanks in advance.

Hi Janisum and welcome to the PCWorld Communities. :D

First, I have moved this Discussion from the Windows Community into the Other Software & Services Community.

Now, Adobe Reader is free, you can download the latest version by clicking this link.

I would highly recommend that you not use Adobe Reader because it is so slow, bloated, and requires too much hard drive space. Instead you can download Foxit Reader.

Good call on Foxit Reader. I always forget about it.

I highly recommend Foxit as an alternative and better pdf viewer. Another alternative to Acrobat Reader is Sumatra PDF - http://blog.kowalczyk.info/software/sumatrapdf/ . If you need a reader that allows you to mark-up pdf's I suggest PDF-XChange Viewer - http://pdf-xchange-viewer.en.softonic.com/ . All are freeware.
