Texas Instruments said that one of the TV makers that uses its DLP technology is working on using a laser for illumination instead of a lamp or LEDs. (Sorry; can't remember which manufacturer that is). But it's a ways off; one of the challenges is that using a laser would produce a huge color gamut, and adapting that gamut--i.e., downsampling it to work within the NTSC color gamut--is very difficult.
