Actual site laptops more expensive

I will use Dell/HP as an example.

Does anyone know why certain laptops from dell and hp are more expensive on their actualy websites than other advertised websites.

I recently spec'ed out a laptop from dell from dell.com.

Then I saw an advertised laptop from dell same model series on another website with more specs for less.

WHY?

Simple answer is that some companies may offer discounts and so in order to get that discount you may either have to go through a particular affiliate or enter some code to get that savings to prevent everyone from getting that discount. So for example there are various "Dell deals" as they are known to get the price knocked down on a Dell. In some other cases it may be that you saw a refurbished laptop rather than a new laptop and thus as such it is going to be cheaper as the refurbished one is kind of like a used car. May still be good, may be a lemon. Who knows for sure.

Course in other cases you may be seeing places where someone offers mail-in rebate scams which can also happen in some cases I think.

JB

The manufacturer's website sells them at their "suggested retail price." This is not the cost at which retailers buy them, they get them for far less. So it is completely up to the retailers to put a price tag on the computer. Most retailers try to keep prices low, some lower than others. You have to shop around to find the best deals. I personally recommend www.newegg.com . They have great deals on computers, and always have low prices on their products, and ship next day.

Well its usually on the availability of products and if there are more than needed. Thats why dell always has sudden deals, cause they realize they have a surplus of what was expected, so in order to keep efficiency, they have deals (almost spelt dells.. :P ) to get rid of excess product. Thats why when you call them they may sometimes say, if you buy this with it for the next hour or so you'll get 10 % off or some crap, happened when I upgraded my video card in my m1710!!

better products using CTO
From what I have learned about these pricing structures, it may more beneficial to purchase from the manufacturer. For example, you can buy an HP laptop from CompUSA but the screens are not the same as if you used CTO (configure to order) on their website. HP uses QDS screens, which are great. But CompUSA will have the product manufactured using NEC screens. You can see the difference if you inspect it closely. For more on this, see the review for the HP dv2000t on www.notebookreview.com
