Could you check the temperature of your system, e.g. CPU, graphics card, hard drive, to see if it may be overheating? Also, what kind of cooling does the system have: Just fans, liquid cooling, or nothing? My laptop for example has none and can get a little warm, e.g. it has gotten up to 70 degrees Celsius, and then shut right off and so what I think may be happening is that your system is getting hot and then slowing things down to try to cool off.

Speedfan is one of a few free utilties that can measure temperature on a computer if you want an example of a software way to do this. Some systems in their BIOS can tell you what the temperature is as well as that may be an idea after you reboot one of these times to see how warm are things in there.

Regards,
JB

Did you try to check the temp as was suggested in the first reply? If your system locks up and gives an error code (the beeping), that would likely be a hardware failure or problem. Does it do this immediately or does it take awhile? Have you updated the drivers from NVidia's website? Have you checked any CoD forums to see if there's issues with Nvidia cards and gameplay? Those are some steps to take, let us know how things go.

OH MY F N GOSH!!! sorry, this is exciting in a weird way. i have the exact same issue. please see my issue under DESKTOP topic PC Freezing During Game Play...

ed1856, we should follow-up together in regards to our issue because just last night it happened to me again. mind you this happened before i installed my new graphics card. it's something else...

BUT ed1856, it's important that you read my post and feedbacks first before we discuss so that we are on the same page and can go forward researching further.

let me know if you're game though. otherwise, good luck.

computer shutdown
The first thing you need to do is ,as the other guy suggested,is to install speedfan on your computer so you can keep track of over-heating issues.Secondly, lay your hands on every bit of information about your paticular model of computer as well as any accessaries in it.Learn it all frontwards and backwards. Then, you may be able to start understanding what is going on with it.This is the number one reason why I am constantly preaching that it makes so much sense to not buy a computer but rather, starting from scratch,to research what you want it to do and what you need to do that. Then find the best components available that will do the job and build it yourself. Not only will you save money, you will be intimately familiar with what is inside that black box. Also,it really is one hell of a kick when you fire that puppy up for the first time and it works perfectly.Try it,you'll see what I mean.Any way, good luck getting you 'puter straightened out.

wow runninron69, easy tiger. pc world forums are to help folks, not bash or demoralize. we were all there at one point. heck, i am still learning about computers and i've been a power user since early 80's (8 yrs. old). besides, how else does one learn about gadgetry?
you read, apply and/or seek help from others.

anyway, ed1856 i'm still researching this issue. it appears this has been a common and popular issue for a long time now and there really isn't a permanent remedy at this time. according to my research thus far, the more complex the games are the more likely games will freeze-up. you can have a kick-ass rig too and it's still a possibility that the game will freeze on you.

Sometimes a game will freeze because there are bugs in it too...

Just sayin',

Hey guys, I'm Having this issue with 2 of my PC's.
Firstly id like to say that theres a million topics on this that I've found and secondly, heres a list of what ive gathered that might possibly be wrong.

1.) Direct X - Update or reinstall ur Direct X.
2.) Update all your drivers (Specifically to drivers that are not the same version that u currently have), if u have the latest drivers installed for everything then try a older version.
U can do this with each driver separately to c if it fixes the problem after uve done a certain one.
3.) Make sure ur PSU is strong enough to pull the ENTIRE system. (If u have a 400w and your fans dip or slow down when u start up a game then get a 450W or higher, preferably get the highest one u can get your hands on.)
4.) turn off anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering, also make sure that these 2 are turned off in the game u are trying to play.
5.) Make sure that ur system is not overheating, by this I mean: Clean out any dust, Check all the fans are working correctly and lastly monitor ALL temperatures (Graphics, CPU, system, ect)

Thats the list ive come up with that MIGHT possibly be causing this problem, also note that its taken me a weeks worth of browsing and reading and that these are the only points in about 500+ topics regarding this issue that seem to be the fixing the problems.

As for me, I havent done any of this yet because my PC is in the UK and im in SA. I'll do it as soon as i get back home.

Mmm, just found a completely different angle on this issue.

A guy called "ruudje_1976" wrote this:

"Im pretty sure i found the exact problem. It's in the DxDiag of every single person that posted a problem here. See the "Video Accel" and "Deinterlace Caps" mess in the video specifications of the DxDiags? One member of the forum installed another game on his PC after having the same problem with Scarface. Turned out that by installing this other game, his DxDiag was changed. It no longer contained those "Video Accel" and "Deinterlace Caps" specifications and AGP status was disabled. Suddenly Scarface worked for him."

"Try this:"

"Go to Control Panel, click Display, Settings, Advanced, Troubleshoot, set the hardware accelaration bar all the way to the left! Then try the game again. It may be usefull to restart your PC first. Let me know if it works folks."

Hope this helps someone.

Me again,

I have been doing some extra research on the topic as none of those above have worked for me (then again I had a friend test it for me since im still in SA) another point came to light.

Memory: Get a memory tester like for instance "memtest86x", preferably one that boots off a CD and doesnt require u to be in windows for the program to run. Run this test for a couple of hours and see if theres any memory addresses which are not functioning as they should be. Bare in mind these programs can get alittle complicated if u start changing settings for a more indepth result. Or if u cant get hold of one of these programs, borrow a friends RAM stick (make sure he's aware that his might go bust aswell) which u know is working correctly and stick that into ur PC.

Hope this helps
G/L

hello copyof. i've read about memtest86. seems like a useful tool to have. i will perform both tests in windows base (using another software) and out of windows base (memtest86). i highly doubt that i have memory dump, corruption, etc. because the freezing happened before and after the upgrade.

i had a 512MB ram stick, ddr2 pc2-4200/266MHz installed, and swiped it out for 2 ballistix ddr2 pc2-5300/667MHz (dual channel mode).

your input is greatly appreciated. 8)

Hey hey =)

Guess what? A guy I met here in SA, called George, has the exact same problem. Same thing happens to him - PC freezes up in games only. So as I wasnt sure my friend in the UK did everything correctly on my 2 systems, I convinced George to let me mess around with his PC to c what i can come up with. Here's a list of what is not wrong with it.

1.) RAM - working perfectly
2.) Drivers - all up to date or the best version for his specs
3.) HDD - 160gb Maxtor working perfectly
4.) Powersupply - He has 400w, we tested with 500w and still got same problems
5.) CPU - Not over heating and works perfectly in another PC

Which leaves 3 possibilities:

1.) Motherboard - Power spikes are frequent where he lives apparently
2.) Graphics card - we havent found a spare one that can run C&C Generals yet
3.) Input Devices - (but that can also link to the mobo) Keyboard and mouse might not be functioning correctly in games.

The input device thing I read this morning @ 6am - Apparently games can freeze up if u have a faulty input device or if the Input devices are conflicting. Now fortunately Microsnot made a OS that "will notify the user if there is a conflict in the system"... Yippe! but it doesnt always work that way now does it. One way that I can come up with testing this is by setting ur BIOS to "Halt on all errors, But keyboard" and boot up the system without a keyboard attached - that way u can switch between a USB and PS2 mouse. Problem is it might be the mouse and not the Keyboard :? - If u are planning on testing it this way... make sure to disable ur windows logon password since u wont have a keyboard to type with ... trust me, it saves ALOT of frustration

Later,
keep me updated.

LMAO, its the same Issue!

I have a question-- does your sound connect to your sound card or is everything plugged in onboard? I'm trying to somehow relate this beeping noise to possibly the sound...

Hey hey,

Well in my experience its not the sound either thats causing the issue.

Try disabling your sound devices (what i did) and ull find that it still freezes.

I uninstalled my sound devices (which is onboard) and it still froze up meaning that the sound doesnt have anything to do with this.

Hope it answers ur question.
