Should I get new router, boost antenna, or repeater?

Have linksys wrt54G wireless router and Linksys WMP54GR wireless pci card. they're on different floors about 100 feet apart, and getting dropped every so often.

A computer with same card 10 feet from the router has no problems.

So, should I get a repeater or one of those boost antennas (HGA7S
) to improve signal to the downstairs computer?

thanks

The cheapest way would be to grab a pair of high gain antennas (+10db or higher).

Re: Should I get new router, boost antenna, or repeater?
Wireless signal is always tricky to play with.

A repeater is always a good investment vs an antenna booster. I have heard of successful stories of using repeaters for a community with sucess. It is always a good idea to play with the location of the router (which is where the signal originates). Sometimes because of the location of the dsl or broadband modem, the router is placed where the signal cannot radiate properly. Sometimes raising the router 4 to 5 feet from the floor improves reception.

If you are adventurous enough, try using Netstumber (www. netstumbler.com). It is a nifty software that measures the signal of the wireless transmitter. Then you can set the proper placement of the router for proper orientation for optimal signal.

Hope this helps,

If the router is on the floor above the PC, don't put the router on the floor thinking that it's closer to the PC. I saw someone make that mistake once.
