Microsoft Office or Open Office?

What do you use in your office? Although Microsoft Office has been the standard for years, many businesses are switching to Open Office. Tell us what you use, and what you'd like to be using if it were up to you!

For work, I actually use a combination of both, for example, I hate Word, but love Powerpoint, so I use OpenOffice Write, and Microsoft Powerpoint. That way, I can get the best of both worlds! I do this because OpenOffice has the availibility to export your document into a PDF file, which is helpful as I publish a small e-zine.

I've been using Microsoft Office 2000 for a long time. I don't see the reason to switch, i've never had a problem with Office 2000. I guess i'm too chicken to try something new.

OpenOffice only 1 purpose
I agree the only reason why I use OpenOffice is making your doc's converge into PDF files.

But now there are freeware apps out there that can do the same thing. I'll still stick to my OpenOffice for documents. Besides that I thnk MS Office 2000 is better.

I don't see why people like MS Office, they have to plug so many holes in it all the time; and don't get me started on "it is targeted because it is more popular," as there hasn't been a single virus that has been seen in the wild that could allow system access through macros/vulnerabilities (and the proof-of-concept one that was made used a hole that was already patched).

The only plus is that everyone uses it, so then you don't have to use the export option.

MS for Open Office
I've been using MS office since version 97' and am currently using 2003. Hands down it is the best office software out there; I love the integration. Careful users don't have to deal with macro/virus issues.

Caveats: I didn't BUY the office suite I use; my company did. For those light in the wallet, Open Office is the best alternative. OR you could always buy that other office suite nobody mentioned (for good reason IMHO): WordPerfect. $149 list price :)

I just purchased Office 2003 and have Office '97 in pc right now. I need to know if I should uninstall Off. '97 and then install Off. '03 or just try to install '03 over '97 version ?????? I purchased the full version, it's not an update/upgrade. Thanks for your input,

flicka

I use both, though Microsoft Office more than Open Office. I like them both, but Microsoft Word makes it easier to create Mail Merges than Open Office, so I use MS Word for Merges and alternate between the other applications.

Like another user of Open Office commented, I like the fact that you can export documents to PDF. I would love to use Open Office because it is free and very functional, but it will take time for me to let go of MS Office, especially with it's new Office 2007 beta showing real promise (user-friendly and tab oriented).

How about "ThinkFree"
I just tried ThinkFree and found it interesting. How do you think "ThinkFree" fits into all this?

I also use a combination, mainly because I use Vista and Umbuntu. I have to admit that Office 07 is far better than I expected... I've been loving that.. as another user mentioned... the feature of makeing a PDF in office is a great benefit..

Used them both. They both have good and bad points.

I think I prefer MS Office because they take pride in their product by updating it ALL the time with patches! (note the sarcasm??)

You never hear of OpenOffice being patched.

Open Office
I use OpenOffice 99% of the time because it simply makes it easier to get work done. I find the layout of the application to be more intuitive and intelligently designed. While my workplace is "standardized" on MS Office, I have installed OpenOffice and use it for everything that I do. The only time that I fire up MS Office is .... Wait, I can't remember the last time I used it.
