I'd like to nominate Schoolhouse, a nifty little Mac app that has been instrumental in helping me keep track of my college assignments. I can even sync assignments to my iPod and calculate my grades. Just what I need.

I nominate the Nintendo Wii
Yeah, I'm sure others are crowing about it, and I'm sure others are thinking that the other consoles looks better and thus deserve bigger nods.

But what stands out about the Wii to me is how FUN gaming is on it! That to me is what makes it a winner, its revolutionary control system and how interactive gameplay is because of it.

In addition, the Wii has an elegant user interface that is very intuitive. Setup was easy. The Mii idea is brilliant; it's just a shame more games don't take advantage of it.

So, my nod for product of the year is the Nintendo Wii.

Nintendo Wii
If sales weren't enough evidence, the Nintendo Wii should be this year's product of the year. It's the people's gaming system.

Nomination
I want to nominate PortableApps.com for one of the top spots. The site has a ton of apps that can be run from a flash drive and they are all for free. the apps are also always updated. as soon as the install only version of an app comes out PortableApps.com has a portable version in Beta testing within days and a final release out in 2-3 weeks. The apps are growing in number and it is a great website for 2006 and it will only get better in 2007!:)

Vista is okay, the new interface is nice but it really sows down the computer, by the way Vista was not released until 2007

Generally, we feature products released from mid-year the year before (in this case, 2006) until mid year the current year (2007). However, this is not a strict requirement, so as long as you think the product is good, feel free to nominate it!

Re: Nike + iPod Sport Kit
I agree. I've run over 100 times and close to 800 km since August 2006. Very compelling and motivating to use this product. The Nike+ website gets better and better and it's just plain fun to see your latest run animated in Flash.

Kudos also to Marware for the Sportsuit Sensor + which allows me to use the Nike + with my Asics shoes.

Dasgeek wrote:A lot of people thought "Who is going to want that?" but the Nike+ iPod Sport Kit has been a great accessory to drive iPod and Nike shoe sales. It got me running more. The NikePlus website has also been a success logging over 10 million miles of running by its members.

I'm gonna say the AppleTV for the reason that it will enable people to view content in many different ways than the standard distribution channels want to provide. Just Like the iPod it could well change the industry for the good.

I think that NeXTStep should be nominated. With out NeXT Apple might not be here today and the NeXTStep operating system was the foundational design of OS X.

With out NeXT and Steve Jobs coming to Apple. Other products like the iPod may not have come and with out that other products like the crappy Zune may not be here.

Nomination for Best Product of the Year
My nomination is the Apple iPhone. I know everyone says, "Well, of course, iPhone, it's so cool," but I nominate it not b/c it's Apple's phone, or b/c it's a wide-screen iPod, or b/c it's an interweb communications thingie. It's b/c the iPhone is not a phone at all - it's a full fledged computer. Most people primarily email, surf the web, play with pictures, listen to music, and keep their list of contacts and appointments. The iPhone does all of that, just like a Mac, in the palm of your hand. It's the Newton Message Pad reborn (a hand-heald computer), except it's much. much better. Sure, you can't edit movies or crunch data, but that's what a workstation is for. This is an EveryMan computer in your hand. That's why it's one of the best products of the year.

The newly released 8-core Apple Mac Pro with dual quad-core Intel Xeon ("Clovertown") processors running at 3.0 GHz.

As the guys over at MacDailyNews.com put it, "For when you absolutely, positively have to sequence the entire human genome before lunch."

This is some serious hardware.

What makes it even more drool-worthy:

It uses a "special version" (read: exclusive to Apple for now) of the "Clovertown" Xeon running at 3.0 GHz. The fastest "official" chip runs at 2.66 GHz. (See http://www.electronista.com/articles/07/04/05/mac.pro.special.xeon/)

Second, not only is this the only commercial box you can buy today with this chip, they even beat Dell on price, with a "comparable" (admittedly, pretty top notch) configuration.

Have a look:

From Dell:

2 X Quad Core Intel Xeon Processor X5355 2.66GHz, 2 X 4MB L2,1333

AppleCare Protection Plan for Mac Pro/Power Mac (w/or w/o Display) - Auto-enroll

Price: $8,789

I'm sure you could tweak the specs here and there, but keep in mind, only Macs can run MacOS X, Linux, and Windows software - the world's largest software library - natively and simultaneously.

Essentially, the new Mac Pro is the most POWERFUL AND COMPATIBLE PC on the market.
