Ads are a distraction

I understand you need revenue, but the pop up ads, as well as animated ads, are really distracting and making the site more frustrating to use.

The only pop up ads you should be seeing on our site are for magazine subscriptions. We do not allow advertisers to serve other pop-up ads. The magazine subscription ad should appear only once every two weeks.

We do have guidelines as to what types of ads we accept and what we don't. If you see a particular ad that you think is frustrating or excessive, please let me know and I can look into it.

The ads are how we keep the site and the forums free to use. We are sympathetic to our users (we are our users, too) and the need for less ads on the page. However, we must temper this with the need to make money to pay wonderful people (like me!) and cover the expenses of making the site and magazine.

I'm sorry that you find the site frustrating but I hope you can appreciate why the ads are there.

Kellie

Do away with the animated ads
When I have downtime at work, I like to read up on information on PCW, however there are times when I get a runtime error when I try to view a page; it mainly occurs with the animated ad with the title multiply security; therefore, preventing me from reading the article. Although I could read it at home, I get caught up with things at home and forget about it.

Please let me know your OS, browser (name and version), and any extensions you are running as well as the specific text of the error, the page you saw the ad on, and details about the ad (who it was for, what it looked like, what it said, where it was on the page, etc). I'll have our tech team and ad operations team look into it.

You can PM me the information if you'd rather, or click the email button on my profile to email it to me.

OS is XP Pro. IE7
Error message reads: Runtime error has occurred. Do you wish to to debug?
Line: 233
Error: Object required
This appeared when I went to the software review section.
Please note that this error message appears only when the animated ad for Multiply Security appears, all other ads do not cause this error message.
Also as mentioned before it occurs while at work and yes I am allowed to view PCW website.

Full Page Ad IS Distracting
I would agree with the original poster. The full page ad that pops up upon first loading pcworld.com is a big annoyance to me. One of the things I have enjoyed about using pcworld.com in the past has been tasteful, usually un-obtrusive, yet content oriented ads placed either at the top of the page, or along the sidebar (or both), but generally out of the way of the articles.

Now, upon loading pcworld.com for the first time in a session, I'm smacked in the face with a full page ad that I have to click on a separate link to get past and into the site. I understand PCWorld still needs to make some revenue to be able to put out as much content as they do on their website, but really, do we need this extra in-your-face, bold advertisement first thing when we're trying to get to some pertinent information?

I think pcworld.com could do without the extra full-page advertisements. And on a side note, what happened to the "Find It" search box? I can't find it anywhere on the main page anymore...? I used that box all the time and found it very handy. (I know I can use the direct find.pcworld.com address, but I really liked the search box, am I just not seeing it?)

Thanks backpack and jziegler --

backpack -- I'll pass on your info to our ad ops team and have them look into it. Thanks for posting it.

jziegler -- I agree with you, but I think it has a frequency cap on it (it only appears once in a certain period of time, although I can't remember what it is). It is an interruption, but it's not hard to click the link and get around it. We do try to limit it so that it isn't very intrusive.

The Find It search box was indeed removed from the header, as we found that many people were confusing it with the site search box. We have received a large number of complaints about its removal, and we are working on adding it back to another section of the site navigation, away from the site search box. For now, please do use the full URLs.

Thanks

Kellie

To prevent spam theres a code that doesn't allow anyone with fewer then X amount of posts to actually post a link. Post elsewhere on the board a few times and then try your link again.

There's also a certain amount of days you have to be registered. The forum mod that does this shouldn't affect PMs, so try PMing Kellie the link if you can't post it.

I don't mind some of the ads....but the one that really annoys me is the ad to subscribe to the magazine, when i'm already a subscriber... is there a way to incorporate our subscription account into our online account so magazine subscribers dont get the magazine ads? thanks! stephen, charlotte, nc

Hi again, Stephen...

It's something that we've thought about, but it's a bit of a difficult process. I don't know all the technical details, but it would probably require people to give more information than they wanted to when they registered on the site.

The popup can be annoying, but it should only show up once every two weeks (assuming you don't clear your cookies/cache) and only takes a second or two to close.
