Second Hand Laptop

Hi

We are travelling around Oz for 5 months and would like to upgrade from a PC to Laptop. I have got a price on a second hand laptop and would like comments.

IMBR40, PM1.4, 512 RAM, 80HD, 14", 2 USB, DVD Burner, Network Card, Modem 56k, running XP Pro.

Comes with 3 month warranty.

We need to upload video footage, photos, send emails, surf net, play DVD's, etc.

The price is $650.00 Australia dollars. Is this a good buy?

Personally id spend a little bit more money and get some more ram, and a wireless card. Your going to want a wireless card if your traveling around so you can connect at all the wifi spots.

FYI other people the converter site said it equaled about 546.715 US Dollars.

Screens a little small.. again I don't know much about processors. Anyway I was saying if you spent just a little bit more money you could get something that would be a whole lot faster. (and possibly better quality to last you longer before you have to replace it)

A few things you might want to consider on the road, maybe insurance, extra batteries/charger, car converter.

Do you plan on editing the videos on your computer?

All in the end though you can do what you want to... providing you get a wireless card. Its a fair amount for what they are offering but as I said you might want to consider an upgrade.

I don't think you necessarily need a firewire port. I upload video and pictures via usb/sd ports.

Used Laptop
fishywishy - the problem with buying a Dell is all the posts on this forum about their problems. The may get straightened out, but until then I would be leary of recommending a Dell.

As for the firewire vs USB port, it would depend on the camera. I know most digital still frames either have the USB cable or you can remove the card and use a card reader. I cannot speak to digital video camers.

im not sure how u figure buying a used laptop (unless its from a friend/family) is any safer then a dell with a warranty. sure u see a couple problems on the forums, but compare that to how many people have dells with no problems. thing is, they dont come on the forums saying how much they love it

i think the usb feature is primarily for mpeg video captures to a media card, whereas firewire is for digital8/minidv/hd format
