The Coming War Over the iPhone
But but but it's cool. Isn't that enough?
And besides who cares if no firewall. Hackers don't try to do their job on Apple products. Remember?

Whine, whine, whine...
I'm sick and tired of "the iPhone doesn't have this and the iphone doesn't have that" from supposed IT market and security "experts". First off, the HTC made and Cingular branded PDA phone I use has the same vulerabilities as the iPhone. The only thing different between the two is my HTC has Exchange functions. But guess what, Exchange doesn't rule the world and IT personnel (like me) are perfectly capable of creating or acquiring firewall apps that seperate our mobile Wi-Fi devices from sensitive data on our networks.

We need to stop worrying so much about the device and worry more about the people. What makes data vulerable is employees who don't have a clue. Start screening your personnel and then come tell me a device, by its very nature, is a security risk.

Oh... and by the way, I won't be buying an iPhone. But only because the price point is ridiculous. For the same price I can come within a few dollars of a UMPC that gives me more functionality in a package that's easier to handle.

The authors, and Gartner need to wake up
A firewall for a smartphone? I have never heard of any smartphone having a firewall at all. There are some with antivirus programs but you have to buy those separately.

There rumored Exchange support most likely as reported on Engadget...need to read something confirming this.

PBX integration? Show me any phone that has out of the box PBX integration other than a Blackberry. You have to get applications to support this activity. Even Blackbeery requires that your company by a server or you pipe your emails through hotmail, etc for "integration."

It has about as much security as any other smartphone out there...not much. So I don't understand what is new information here? If you are going to worry about security, get the Windows Mobile phones out of the workplace. This happens whenever something new and secretive comes out. Someone starts posting stuff about security and "it's so bad," we need to wait and see what the iPhone can do first. Maybe Blackberry will release a client for it? Then IT can worry. As a consumer, I am not worried since it is just like any other phone out there: just a different GUI and it's shinier.

Why don't you worry about all the third party apps that people will be building. It is likely that an IM client will come out, tons of them...the apps will have the security holes, not the phone...just like with EVERY OTHER PHONE.
