Of the criticisms, only #3, 4, & 5 are hardware issues, meaning that any of the others could probably be fixed in subsequent software updates, unless Apple has a really good reason for not doing so. And of those 3 hardware issues, the only one that I am even remotely interested in is #4, but from what I've seen and heard, the AT&T EDGE network is moving along nicely after a presumed update yesterday, not as nice as 3G but good enough to be tolerable. iPhone 2.0 will likely have 3G anyway, not that it helps everyone who bought one yesterday or today.

How can you not mention the fact that there are NO third party applications for the iphone? The only way to get them is by making them run in Safari, which few programers want to do.

You forgot one important failure
In order not to look like a dork holding this piece of hardware up to the side of your head when talking on the phone, you will have to buy a seperate bluetooth headset, It has to be the worst designed piece of junk to ever hit the marketplace, It does nothing that I can't do with my current cellphone, so what if it doesn't look as pretty, for a lot less money I can do a lot more than the IPhone. Apple has succeeded once again to rip the public off with advertising hype, lets wait ten days and listen to the howls of outrage from all the people who stood in line for the cool factor, to realise the shortcomings of what they just bought and how crappy it really is.

What is considered dorky today will be commonplace tomorrow.

IMO Bluetooth headsets are extremely dorky.

Spell Check?
 It doesn't even have spell check for email. We're talking rudimentary stuff missing. Copy, Paste, Undo, headphone interchangeability.... nothing. There are people on the Apple discussion boards today so frustrated they appear to be on the verge of a coronary. There are 38,000 hits on the "no activation" post alone. This is if you can even access the boards they are so full. Proceed with caution, expect delays, and don't expect a robust product. You'll have to spend a lot more than $600 at Apple for that. The hype was created to inflate the stock. Sell it tomorrow first thing. It's going to plumit now that the cat is out of the bag. The next big line at the Apple Store will be people returning the phone.

seriously...
I strolled into my local AT&T store around 1 pm Saturday - there were NO customers at all, and 3 iphones waiting to be played with. I spent about 40 minutes running it through all the paces, and walked out thanking my Higher Power that I didn't buy it and thus saved myself $60 for the restocking fee, because I would definitely have returned it. So many times I went to the wrong place, and there's no Back button, you have to hit Home and start all over. The speaker phone is total crap. It's heavier than I thought. No customization except the wallpaper. Too touch sensitive. Why didn't they make the keyboard able to orient sideways? Because those keys are WAY too close together. And everything else everyone's already said here. What a non-event. Reminds me of Y2K!

Activation Implementation:

Removed by Moderator
1 You must use Itunes to activate with no ATT store backdoor option. Software failure leads to no service.
2 Most Internet users have slow dialup connections because of geography and cost. Most new customers spent hours downloading itumes version 7.3 (49mb) which increased activation time 8 X normal. Anti-customer relations.
3 Itunes sign up does not allow PO boxes for an address. All of Carmel, CA is locked out like many cities. Sorry Clint Eastwood.
4 Itunes signup only allows addresses listed in the national USPS database. Millions are not listed.
5 itunes sign up has a bug that sends a random number of activation requests with no rate plan leading to account lockup.
6 Manual account lockup is handled in India where it is forgotten.
7 No port transfer burst test was conducted to confirm tranfer rate.
