What's up with the outaded reviews?

How come every time I want to check on the latest review for a particular technology (hardware or software) ... the articles I find on this web site are almost a year old or more? For example: Your Security Suites review, they are from last year's versions. I am reday to purchase today and I need more research. Seems like I always have to go to other sites for up to date information. This is not the first time.

Well, I respect what you're saying but I don't agree and here is my opinion about it.

Maybe if you'd let and example will be easier to see what you're saying, for instance, the Top Antivirus Performes isn't a yeard old, It was released on April of this year and is a great review of all products. Like that review, I've seen others that are up to date as well.

But that's just one example, in my opinion, a great review doesn't come right after the technology was released and the reason for that is the need to make an extensive test before you decide to write a review. Write a review saying "well install it was very easy, it has plenty of options aviables for this and that..." isn't a reasonable review just because with just a little testing you can't see the real performance that the technology will have in a user environment-like, that type of performance only will show up if you used several times, for a long lapses of time, or even when you try an especific option of the sofware or the hardware, maybe install it terrific but the updates were painfull, maybe some video card worked well with one motherboard manufacter but didn't with others...all that without talking about beta stages which requiere a different approach

On the software side, if one user has the need of buying an application right away, almost every software corporation offer a demo or trial version which can give the opportunity to see if it will cover all the bases that the user is looking for with that particular sotfware or service.

Anyway, that's just my personal opinion and I respect if you or anyother think different

I think that maybe the primary reason to not just update the reviews is the amount of changes between one version and the other, in most cases, it is pointless to make a new review or update the last one just because the changes aren't big enough so one review works as fine as other.

I think that a product must be reviewed (if we talk about versions) when the changes are important and that doesn't happen too often, the numbers are just that, so have one 2006 version and a new 2007 version, probably won't affect the user much.

PD:// No....I wasn't thinking about bad timing...I think I should now you mentioned ^^ ... just joking ;)

Re: Security suites, antivirus apps, firewall software, antispyware, and others in the same ilk: These things must be tested in batches, and the same batch, because they must be tested using the same "frozen" batch of viruses or threats. Testing with the same threats allows us to evaluate them on a level playing field. We certainly look at usability, features, etc., but the most important thing with these products is protection performance.

We can't test them as they get updated, else we'd have to retest every single one of them, every time any of them them revs. We try to pick a time during the year in which a critical mass of them has been updated, and then we test everything we can get our hands on. That's why the last batch you saw was from last year. We're working on a spyware feature for our October 2007 issue; it ought to go online in late August. Sorry that doesn't help you now, but I think that, when you do see those results, that you can be confident in our conclusions.

On the freshness quotient of other reviews: As with the apps above, we try to pick a time when we can find a critical mass of newly updated products, especially if our tests require batch subjective testing, as in the case with televisions for example. (Almost any TV looks great on its own; it's not until you see them side by side, all color-calibrated, all playing the same content, that you see differences).

But if there's something you'd like to see a review of, by all means, let me know. I'll tell you whether we might consider it, or if it's already in progress.

Outdated Reviews
I posted earlier on this topic (re. 32"/37" LCD HDTV's - all of the "Top 5" rated reviews on this site were for last year's product & no longer available).

Alan Stafford was decent enough to apologize, acknowledge that the info. was out of date, and to explain why, but that does nothing towards remedying the situation.

Up to date product reviews would make this website a much more valuable resource.
