Intel chipset for celeron CPU

I bought P4 915PL chipset cpu and Celeron D 352 cpu.
However I cant get them to work.
Is this the right motherboard for this CPU.
If not which chipset is needed.

Hi Surman. Intel is not the manufacturer of the motherboard. Do you know who the manufacturer of your motherboard is? I did a quick search and I found several different manufacturers of a 915PL motherboard.

I believe, I could be mistaken, but I believe the 915PL is a socket 775 so that is not the problem. Can you be more specific as to how you inserted the CPU?

Okay, I have some questions:

  • Have you verified that you connected all of the wiring correctly and securely?

  • Do you hear any beeps?

  • Do you see any of the fans moving?

  • Is the LED light on the motherboard lit?

  • Did you buy the motherboard and all the components new?

Regarding the power pins, yes, use all of the connections. This holds especially true when it comes to the Power Supply. Speaking of which, what is the rating of your Power Supply and is that new?

Surman, you didn't answer all of the questions. Please answer all of the questions so I, and anyone else who is monitoring this thread, can properly troubleshoot for you.

Please answer this final question...

At this point, without actually being there to confirm that everything is connected properly, my gut is leaning towards hardware failure. If you are not hear any beep, if all of the fans are spinning, and if you connected all of the wires the way the motherboard's owner's manual instructs, then I would venture to say that either the motherboard, Power Supply, or CPU is bad.

There are no indicators to lead me to believe that it's anything else. If the motherboard and CPU are brand new and still within the normal return period, return either or both and get replacements.

As for the Power Supply, well, I am assuming that came with the case unless you installed your own. You can get Power Supplies very inexpensively. I would try newegg.com first. Look for something that is rated 450-500W minimum.

If you would like to avoid this step for right now, disconnect EVERYTHING and start over. Make sure you follow all steps and see if you get the same result.

Boot Problems
Do you not get any text on the screen at all when attempting to boot?

If you do, what messages do you get?

According to this; http://www.intel.com/products/processor/celeron_D/index.htm

The CPU, Motherboard and chipset are all compatible.

True, I am sure they are all compatible. But going by the information that Surman provided, either the CPU, motherboard, or Power Supply is dead.

Hopefully, we will hear back from him or her soon.

CPU won't boot
I was leaning either to the PS or the video card. It's been a while since I have built a PC from scratch, but when I had a bad processor once, it at least gave me the first three or four lines of text on the screen when it initially started the POST it was the video card id. Now it appears the first thing to come on is the options for getting to setup, but I would think that even with a bad CPU he would see something on the screen.

Not necessarily. In cases that I have seen, the CPU is either all or none. Since he or she is getting power to the fans and the hard drive appears to be spinning, I was leaning more towards the CPU or motherboard.

Now, since Surman never answered my Power Supply question, I put that in the mix as well. If the video card was bad, he or she would have heard two beeps or, at the very least, received a POST error message on screen.

Motherboard
Depending on where you bought the components, and their return policy you may want to return one or the other. The MB may be easier to return, but contact the vendor and see what your options are.
