Laptop will not connect to wirelss modem

My wife just purchased a Toshiba laptop. It is equipped with wi-fi. My computers are hooked to a 2wire modem that can be used with both ethernet & wireless. The laptop's wi-fi will not connect unless it is sitting within 18 inches of the modem. As soon as it moves any further away it loses the connection. Nor will it connect if an ethernet connection is currently in use. If I run a diagnostic all it tells me is there isn't a wireless connection available. Another maddening variation is when the laptop IS connected but the browser is unable to display any webpages. There's probably a simple solution but so far it evades me. Any ideas will be greatly appreciated.

sounds like the signal is either weak or there is interference.
Things like portable phones, other wifi spots can conflict. Try turning all other electrical equipment in the area off. Otherwise something like Netstumbler can help in situations like this. Check your firewall as well.
