Question about memory

Was thinking about increasing my memory from 2GIG to 4GIG but wanted to check on a few things.

If I remember back in the days you needed to make sure that your MB can handle high amounts of memory???

Also remember that when you bought memory you wanted to make sure that you get the EXACT same modle (diffrent versions of each modle correct???)

How would I check to see the EXACT version and model I currently have?? With out opening the case and looking on the memory :-)

For example this is what I currently have from when I had the pc built:
2048MB 1024MB X2 DDR2-800 PC6400 Memory Module Corsair XMS2 Xtreme w/Heat Spreader More Options

This is what I was looking to add:

Wanted to make sure that if I buy two more GIG's of this from newegg that it will not have any conflicts with what I currently have.

Do you have the invoice from when and where you purchased it??If you do get the part number and match it up.

...................also, 32 bit windows will not recognise more than 3.25 GB , so adding 4 MAY actually slow down the computer.

quote:dac576810cYea i will look for the paperwork that I got with it, but don't remember it really giving anything else more than what I posted but who knows I miss a lot [/quote:dac576810c]

You might shoot them an e-mail and ask, you'll need to know what the timings are, ( latency ) and what brand, and better yet, part #

quote:dac576810cSo would it be any good to go from the current 2GIG to 3GIG?[/quote:dac576810c]

Maybe, some say yes , some say no, I have run mine with 2GB, and then upped to 3GB, which I am currently running, and there was only a minor difference.

You have matched only part of the specs. The most important is the PC206400 and the second is the timing. Corsair shows both a 5-5-5-12 and a 4-4-4-12 in their XMS2 line. I don't think the XMS2 versus XMX2 Extreme is that big a deal.

Looking at the photos on Newegg of both the 1GB and 512MB modules, the timing is on the label, so if you can't find the invoice, look at one of the modules.

You can probably put the 2GB in, but why spend the extra money at this point?

Thats exactly what it means, 800 or PC2-6400 is the max speed the MB will support.

The timing seems to be on the label at the far right hand side.
Here is a link to the photo of the 512MB module on Newegg. (I hope the link works, its a long one).

2 gig is already good enough. I wouldn't recommend going to 4 gig. Max i would say is to get 1 more gig and thats it.

You have a dual channel MB, 2 512's will balance the 2 1Gig's. 1 additional Gig in one channel could actually be slower that the 2GB you have now.

Only 800! Most of us are having to do with way less.
