Need Help Deciding on What Security To Go With

I've recently figured out that Norton doesn't work for me at all due to getting viruses and other stuff while having it. So my question is what is the best Anti - Virus or PC Protection Software to purchase or to get for free. I want the best protection I can possibly get.

Hi :

It is wise to "remove" Norton and get other security ; Recommendations should ONLY be made when

the SPECIFIC Name of your Operating System is known, which you have NOT done at this point in time.

IF you have Win XP ( knowing if you have SP1 or SP2 with "it" helps ), see my Recommendations in

PCUser123 "Security Suite vs Best of Class" Thread .

Re: Need Help Deciding on What Security To Go With
Hi :

Did you read the info I wrote which is now a "Document" in this Forum at
http://forums.pcworld.com/docs/DOC-1141 !? IF you are willing to PAY
for very good protection, then for antiVIRUS choose either Kaspersky or
NOD32 and for antiSPYWARE/antiTROJAN , I recommend
"Counterspy" by Sunbelt Software.

Even though you have an "old" Dell, it MAY have some unwanted programs
you may want to consider, using the info at http://www.pcdecrapifier.com
and the FREE program there !? The program was originally called the
"Dell De-Crapifier" .

IF you decide to "replace" Norton, should DOWNLOAD ( not INSTALL ) the
"Replacement(s)", then uninstall Norton from "Add or Remove Programs", then
run the Norton "Removal Tool" at
http://www.majorgeeks.com/Norton_Removal_Tool__SymNRT_d4749.html .
ONLY AFTER Norton is COMPLETELY REMOVED from your computer should you "INSTALL" the new
program(s).

The best free antivirus program would either be avast or avg. I would go with avast.

Hi Caskey :

Been seeing increasingly negative news about SiteAdvisor; there is a long Thread on the Avast Support
Forums at http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=30322.msg250498;topicseen#msg250498 . One of
the Posters there recommended Finjan's "SecureBrowsing", available at http://securebrowsing.finjan.com/ .

Securebrowsing is the same as McAfee SiteAdvisor which he listed already.
