Microsoft Word startup tries to configure Office Ultimate during every start

I have purchased Microsoft Office 2007 Ultimate, not the upgrade. It works fine for all programs, except Microsoft Word.

Have a strange problem, that wastes a lot of time (makes me want to go back to '97!)! Every time I try to start up Microsoft Word program, from within the Microsoft Office folder, it tries to go through a configuration (again every time I start Word) of Microsoft Office. No problem with any of the other MicrosoftOffice 2007 programs.

The Word program works fine after cancelling the configuration steps, or letting the configuration proceed. Any suggestions would be most appreciated to get rid of the unnecessary reconfiguration. Thanks very much!

Hi RWGinson. Welcome to PCWorld. :-)

I have some questions for you:

  • Now, you specifically mentioned, "not the upgrade." Did you already have a version of Office or Word on your computer prior to installing Office 2007?

  • Have you tried to uninstall and reinstall Office 2007?

  • From where did you purchase Microsoft Office 2007 Ultimate?

More than likely, the installation of Office did not completely the first time and each time you start Word, the process is trying to complete. To be safe, if you have not already, I would uninstall Office 2007 and then reinstall.

Re: Microsoft Word startup tries to configure Office Ultimate during every start
Well, I believe you have two situations here:

  • The Installation of Office 2007

  • The validity of the copy of Office 2007 you purchased from eBay

In my opinion, you can find great deals on eBay, if you know exactly how to research the seller. For future eBay purchases, please refer this Document.

Now, let's assume that the actual Office 2007 CD is valid and authentic. Yes, absolutely, uninstall 2007 completely and then reinstall. The newer version of Office should automatically overwrite the older version. If you continue to have problems after you do a uninstall/reinstall, you may want to investigate as to whether or not you have a valid copy of Office.

Re: Microsoft Word startup tries to configure Office Ultimate during every start
I had the same problem and installed the same way, leaving my old Office 2000 programs on the computer while installing the new 2007 until I was sure I would be happy with it. I used Office Home and Student not an upgrade. Endless configuration on startup. I deleted the shortcuts I had on my start up menu, wend to Program Files/Microsoft Office/Office12/ scrolled down to Excel.Exe and WinWord.Exe and on each right clicked and clicked on "Pin to Start Menu" and they both work great. Previously I had started up by going to Programs, Microsoft Office2007, then clicking on each program. To shorten that I had right clicked on those programs, pinning them to the start menu. So they were still starting through Office 2007 which apparently was causing the configuration process to kick in.

Re: Microsoft Word startup tries to configure Office Ultimate during every start

Hi All. I don;t know if OS makes any diffirenece but I'm using Vista and had same problem after I tried to install Office 2007.

Turned out that my old(TRIAL 2003) still some where in my laptop. I had to UNISTALL BOTH office 2003 & 2007 and reinstall 2007 and It works fine up to now.

I hope it helps.

Delete "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\OFFICE12\Office Setup Controller\Setup" (=Microsoft Setup Bootstrapper)
