I agree. People continue to load their PCs with tons of programs to make their PC run better not realizing that it is just more junk to slow your box down.

The only one listed that I would say, 'yes, you probably need this'; would be the Notetab Light. Especially if you work with webpages and you want something that will help you mark stuff into html code (without the bloated unnecessary tags ... cough microsoft cough cough dreamweaver).

For versatile screen capturing and graphics editing almost equal to SnagIt, save $40 with PicPick (http://picpick.wiziple.net/forum), Screenshot Captor (www.donationcoder.com), FastStone Capture (the last free version, 5.3, is in PC World's library), MWSnap (www.mirekw.com/winfreeware/mwsnap.html), or even IrfanView. See my reviews in the Dec. 10, 2006 issue of my utilities blog (http://jonathanstoolbar.blogspot.com).

While Outpost Firewall has a good reputation, Comodo Firewall consistently ranks very highly in tests, and is free. You might have heard of it, as the press and bloggers took notice of it lately. I reviewed it in my Nov. 10, 2006 post.

I hope this is helpful to your readers. For more information on free and cheap utilities and great Web sites, visit me at http://jonathanstoolbar.blogspot.com .

It seems that you have missed out some great freeware and plumped for shareware instead. An example would be Kompozer, which is a good WYSWIG editor that can be used even by a beginner. Another is Gadwin Printscreen, again free, unlike Snagit!

Q: tell us me how it's better than Snagit, which I use and paid for...no disrespect. I truly want to know...

RMcLeod, I don't know if your question about screen capture is directed to me or Thinavila. I can cay that I have heard good reports about Gadwin, though I haven't tried it (same for MWSnap). The others I mentioned above are not better than SnagIt (which I use daily at work), so if you have money to burn, go for SnagIt. If you don't, the alternatives probably will satisfy you too.

BTW, my comment above was the continuation of the following comment, which somehow didn't get posted:

Thanks for a great, useful article. I can't really dispute any of your recommendations. However, as a utilities specialist, please allow me to offer a few alternative suggestions:

Belarc Advisor is a fine system information tool, but System Information for Windows (SIW) is much better - it provides more detailed information in an easy-to-follow hierarchy tree format. For details, see my review in the Aug. 19 issue of my utilities blog (http://jonathanstoolbar.blogspot.com).

Glary Registry Repair is good, but Advanced Windows Care Personal is widely regarded as the best registry cleaner-upper among the many free offerings. It also fixes other Windows problems, and has a scheduler for unattended maintenance.

Clipmate is a fine clipboard manager, but others are equally, or almost equally good and cost nothing. My favorites among free rivals with advanced functionality include ArsClip (www.joejoesoft.com) and Clipboard Help+Spell (www.donationcoder.com).

I hope this is helpful.

While most of the time it's true that the utilities people install just slow their PC down even more, that's not true for CCleaner. It only takes up 10-20MB of space, and I have seen it remove 800MB if junk in one scan. And its registry cleaner can actually fix many pesky problems.

Look, to all those who think what's listed is a waste:

ALL (caps mean friendly emphasis) of these apps are better off KNOWING about 'em (and not needing to) than NEEDING TO KNOW about 'em (and not knowing).

I'm GLAD and APPRECIATIVE they're listed and THANK very much the contributors of PC World.

I'll probably download some of these apps and I know so will others.

This is an amusing read for a Mac user. Our computers need few additions. Even security measures are part of the operating system.

Just last month in your "die Spyware, Die" article you stated that Windows Defender was completely hopeless and Ad Aware wasn't much better. Why did you recommend spending $30 on a screen capturing program (a simple print screen usually works!) but then recommend going cheap on security software? You're much better spending your $30 on something like Spyware Doctor.
And PC Tools have a far better firewall than the one recommended for free also.

Why recommend a product such as SNAGIT that costs money, when you can download Microsoft Media Encoder for free??? This software not only does a decent job for screen captures, but has many other options such as streaming video.
