Daylight Savings Time/Smoke Detector Battery

Hi All. For all those that are in areas that recognize Daylight Savings Time, remember to turn your clocks back one hour (Fall Back). As of this post, it is 7:15am Eastern Standard Time. I do not believe those in the Mountain Time Zone recognize Daylight Savings.

Now, your computer and your cell phone should automatically adjust for Daylight Savings.

If your computer does not automatically recognize DST:

  • Right Click on the time in the lower right hand corner of the screen and click "Adjust Date/Time..."

  • Click on the Time Zone tab

  • Using the dropdown menu, select the region that best fits where you live (for me...GMT-05:00 Eastern Time (US & Canada))

  • Make sure Automatically adjust clock for daylight saving changes is selected

  • If you select a region that does not recognize Daylight Savings, this option will not be available.

  • Click Apply -> OK

Also remember that when you turn your clocks back, it is also a good time to change the batteries in the smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors in your home. Enjoy your Sunday. :D

Re: Daylight Savings Time/Smoke Detector Battery
All the clocks in my home have to be manually adjusted, but my computer is ALWAYS one step ahead of the rest of the gang. :-)

I HATE daylight savings time X-( I realized I woke up one hour earlier than I needed to for church this morning when I got on my computer and noticed the hour back difference. Uhg.

Hi, techie4fun. You made me laugh, all my clocks have to be manually adjusted too. :-) But I was delighted that my laptop was right on the money, like mph said on another post.

Oh, I remember! I woke up sometime in the middle of the night, freaked out because I forgot to change the time! Then I said, heh, the heck with it, I'll do it in the morning... LOL :D

I LOVE daylight saving times in the fall...an extra hour of sleep.

I HATE daylight saving times in the spring...an hour less of sleep.

:-)

I think smax's avatar looks like he just got news that Apple is withdrawing Leopard and is instead substituting Vista.

Re: Daylight Savings Time/Smoke Detector Battery
Three picky-picky things --

1) It's daylight-saving time. Saving is singular. You are saving daylight. Not savings it. (Sorry, pet peeve.)

2) Most of the Mountain time zone does do daylight-saving time. The entire state of Arizona does not, and there is a portion of Indiana that does not.

3) When we fall back an hour, we go from daylight saving time to standard time. Currently, the time in Arizona (for example) is the same as the time anywhere else in the Mountain time zone. It is only in the summer that it is one hour earlier in Arizona and a portion of Indiana than everywhere else in their time zones.

All of my clocks reset except for my watch and my alarm clock. However, my alarm clock (an iHome) does have a DST switch on it, so I can move the clock up or back an hour with just a quick flip of the switch.

Um, I have a PowerBook and an Apple TV, too.

Although the iHome is not an Apple product -- it's an alarm clock that works with iPods so you can go to sleep or wake up to them. Because while I love my morning public radio, the stuff they play at night is strange at best.

But, aren't we doing plural "savings" of daylight time? http://forums.pcworld.com/servlet/JiveServlet/downloadImage/1179/biglaugh.gif

If I can manage to be slightly serious for a moment, I will quote this site:

"Spelling and grammar

The official spelling is Daylight Saving Time, not Daylight Saving*S* Time.

Saving is used here as a verbal adjective (a participle). It modifies time and tells us more about its nature; namely, that it is characterized by the activity of saving daylight. It is a saving daylight kind of time. Because of this, it would be more accurate to refer to DST as daylight-saving time. Similar examples would be a mind-expanding book or a man-eating tiger. Saving is used in the same way as saving a ball game, rather than as a savings account.

Nevertheless, many people feel the word savings (with an 's') flows more mellifluously off the tongue. Daylight Savings Time is also in common usage, and can be found in dictionaries.

Adding to the confusion is that the phrase Daylight Saving Time is inaccurate, since no daylight is actually saved. Daylight Shifting Time would be better, but it is not as politically desirable."

Thus, you are technically correct...however, us idiots use the other enough that society has decided to "bow to our wishes" and accept "daylight-savings time" as an acceptable use. As a case in point, here is an entry for Dictionary.com and here is an entry for Merriam-Webster.

Thus, we are also kind of right too! http://forums.pcworld.com/servlet/JiveServlet/downloadImage/1180/crazy3.gif

Re: Daylight Savings Time/Smoke Detector Battery
When the new dates for shifting time to daylight-saving time and back were being discussed, I remember seeing a news story that said something along the lines of "congress will create an extra hour of daylight". Which is totally incorrect -- there are a finite number of hours of daylight in the day. Congress can't create more daylight, but instead, as you pointed out, shift our typical waking hours such that we enjoy more of the available daylight.

It always strikes me how fragile the concept of time is. I mean, it is currently 1:58 PM in the Pacific time zone, only because we collectively agree that it is. There's nothing holding our schedule-driven society together except a series of collective agreements.

What?!? Congress can't magically create an extra hour of daylight? I thought that they could do anything...except play nice with each other! http://forums.pcworld.com/servlet/JiveServlet/downloadImage/1182/hammer.gif
