Dell vs HP ..

Dell vs HP ..
OK I read Jockas replies, and it half answered my question I am looking at buying a laptop thu work, hense the two choices and Salary sacrifice. I will be using it for:

web browsing,
Large Word documents 500 pages ,
email and
accounting
no gaming,
but I like to look at photos.

I will need it to sync with my desktop. My desktop runs vista home premium. I am sick of sharing my computer with Hubby, and want a laptop so he can have the bigger machine .. grin

I have a budget of about $3000 AUD (with luck wont have to spend more than $2300), I plan on taking my machine places From Car to where ever .. I want a 17”, and don’t plan on upgrading in next 2 years .. so my questions are:
1. Which gets hotter when used on the lap, or hot to rest hands on
2. Which is Reliable
3. In general, never having had a laptop, which would be more user friendly?
4. Whose keypads are a nicer feel. EG, are the keys flat, or concave?

Thanks
Tammy

Re: Dell vs HP ..
Mistteak - I can only answer for myself. I have always been please with the HP products I have owned, and out of approximately 12 printers over the last 20 years or so, only one has died. The others I have either sold or given away to friends and relatives when I wanted something with a little more speed. Thus five years ago when I wanted a new desktop and didn't want to build one myself, I chose an HP, and then three years ago when I wanted a laptop, again I chose HP. This fall, having converted a new HP Media Center desktop to Vista, I explored the possibility of upgrading my three year old HP laptop to Vista but because of the integrated video chip not having enough power could not do so. I began the investigation into a new desktop and looked, checked out the options on HP.com, went into the stores and put fingers on keyboard, and the change in feel and beauty of the new HP laptops sold me. I ordered the new laptop from HP.com and it was Fedex'd directly from the factory in Singapore to my house.

I have been very please with it, it is the dv9500t, custom configured on HP.com. From looking at the Dell's in the ads, they have also improved the look and feel of their laptops recently. They are all lighter and easier to use. While I am totally pleased with my HP, and by the way, you can configure the HP with two hard drives (it has two bays) and can thus separate OS and Programs from data, I think either is more a matter of personal choice. One of the nice things about the two companies, is they are so competitive, that what ever one does, the other will follow very shortly. We are then the winners.

Take the time to visit the stores (if available) and put fingers, on keyboards. Spend some time on the web sites of the two and familiarize yourself with what is available. You may have to see if a friend or co-worker has one of the Dells, because that one is not available in stores that I am aware of.

One of the major differences in laptops vs your desktop, is that the laptops generally have the glossy screen that some find disturbing at first, expecially if you are looking at an image with a dark background in a brightly lit room. Reflections can be a problem, but once you get used to them, a slight movement of the screen and the reflection is gone. This glossy finish gives the bright colors, a major advantage of Plasma TV's over earlier LCD's. Now you are starting to see them come into play with desktop flat panel monitors and LCD TV's.

Dell no way... they forgot to plug in my hdd and theres not even room to bolt it in or anythings its like dangling plus my uncles hdd went down in less than a year turned out had some defect plus they had battery problems with a laptop and it was recalled or something. I would go with hp but i highly recommend building your own computer if you can.

Re: Dell vs HP ..

The dell 17" laptop is really good and you won't need to spend more than $1200 on it. I do recommend windows xp over vista. Vista is crap and your computer will run like crap too, it will not get better. I'm guaranteeing longer battery life with XP. Most laptop drives don't get very hot, the cpu may get a little warm if it's ventilation is hindered, but i don't think the drive or the cpu are under the palm rests on the 17" dell. Dell and Hp keyboards are pretty good, but I would choose dell over hp.

Caps lock, not necessary all the time.

Dells are not very reliable and there customer service leaves much to be desired. If your worried about your laptop heating up there are cooling pads you can buy.. I'm not sure about portable one's though haven't really looked into them. Maybe you should go down to your nearby electronic store so you can feel they keypads yourself. Also I normally don't suggest it but if your buying a laptop and are worried about reliability then get an extended warranty) etc so you can get it fixed if needed. I know big screens are nice but if your going to haul it around all the time consider how much it weighs along with maybe getting a smaller laptop. Just a suggestion I carry mine around all the time and it gets to be a burden after a while. Also if your going to be carrying it around all the time consider battery life.

Regardless of the decision you make, you will have the comfort of having made your decision on a foundation of knowledge. Good luck and enjoy your machine. Let us know how it works out, and if you have any questions, you know one place to come to.
