Linux for older computers

I am new both to Linux and this Forum. I just wanted to know if anyone has tried Kubuntu distro? Also if anyone knows of a good distro to use on older computers? I mean really old. I just wanted to try to do something with a few old door stops i've got setting around. If anyone else here is new to Linux here is a good site to look into http://thelinuxnewbie.blogspot.com

Have you ever noticed how many people state their opinion only to backtrack or apologize? It really undermines what they have to say. You may or may not have this issue, but it's a good time to pay attention.

For older systems, if you're willing to give time to learning how to rely more on the command prompt, Slackware is an excellent choice for older systems.

I haven't used Kubuntu enough to suggest it or not.

VectorLinux is an excellent distribution for older machines. It's based on Slackware but is far easier to use.

Try xubuntu. It is on the ubuntu install cd just like kubuntu is. It does not use ase much system resources as ubuntu does because it uses xfce instead of gnome or kde

Ubuntu- No
Kubuntu- No
Xubuntu- Yes

Xubuntu is very light-weight. You're well within the requirements. But make sure it can run on yours with the LiveCD.

There are a good amount of choices.

Or, if you want to go the safe route, just dual-boot Windows/Xubuntu. You can either resize the Windows partition, and make room for Xubuntu. If you have enough space (2-3GB is probably enough), then install Xubuntu in that space. If you have a spare hard drive, you can just install Xubuntu on that hard drive, and configure either NT Loader (the windows bootloader), or use Grub (DO NOT use LiLo, it's a horror to configure).

Hope that answers your question.
