Okay, from the content of your posts, I would gather that you connected the device before installed the software and drivers. Is that correct? The vast majority of USB device ask that the user installs the drivers first and then connects the device.
The first thing I can suggest is to try and connect this device to another computer. Remember, install the software and drivers first and then connect the device. If the device works, you know there is something amiss with your computer. If it does not, then you know the device is faulty and needs to be replaced.
If you find that the device works with another computer, a System Restore on your computer may help your situation. For your reference, a System Restore will not remove your files or personal data. Newly installed applications will have to be reinstalled and system settings will have to be reset.
If you are not sure how to get into System Restore, click on Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> System Restore.
