ghostrecon game keeps crashing

Well there's a reason why my username is "nogeek". In regards to problems w/ new graphics card, I have a pentium 2 2.8Ghz dual core cpu, antec 550 PSU (new), and am using XP pro OS w/ service pack2 installed. RAM is 1Ghz.The graphics card is an nvidia 8400 w/ 512 mb. I uninstalled and reinstalled the card and downloaded the latest ghostrecon advanced warfighter patch (v1.35) I can play the game for a few mins. then get the black screen and message that it must close. I own the cd version of the game. Also I used to be able to load the game from desktop shortcut but have to now have game in cd drive. I'd like to be able to not have to use disc everytime. Thanks.

hello nogeek!
i think u mistyped a couple of words - so u have 1gb ram,as far i know 8400 is 256mb ,unless your card manufacturer has modified the chipset.
also its not a great gaming card.which company's card is it?
If you are referring to ghost recon-advanced warfighter (u havent specified the game),try starting it first under low settings.

Re: ghostrecon game keeps crashing
Hi nogeek, Looks like you traveled the same road I did. I bought the 8400 GS thinking I was getting a good gaming card when in fact I had a better gaming card in the 7600 GS. I ended up getting an evga GeForce 8600GT 256 Mb DDR3 card. I was trying to play The Witcher and it kept crashing. Also, I was playing Neverwinters Night 2 on the 7600 GS card with no problems and it would barely play on the 8400 GS. You need to go to a different card. The bit rate for the 8400 is only 64. It is 128 with the 8600GT as well as the 7600 GS. There are other factors as well. Also, I would recommend adding an additional 1 GB of ram if possible. Some games require you have a CD in the drive in order to play them. You have a good PSU. If your budget can handle buying a 8600 GT, I would recommend it as the 8800s are still rather pricey. I got the 8600 GT for under $120 at TigerDirect. coastie65

Re: ghostrecon game keeps crashing
Hi NoGeek, The bad news is that the 8400 GS card is no good for gaming......period. I made the same mistake thinking I was doing an upgrade, when in fact, the 8400GS was far worse than my 7600GS. My 7600GS did quite well until it gave up the ghost. A month after installing the 8400, I ended up buying an 8600 GT and realized that was the card I should have gotten the first place. With the 7600, I could play Neverwinters Night 2, but could barely plat it with the 8400. Bottom line is the problem is with the card. The 8500 is only marginally better spec wise. coastie65
