finally able to build that dream system Need some help please

The first week in February I will be getting a nice check. After paying off all my bills and taking care of some money put back for future, kids, etc. I will be left with a nice amount to finally build my dream machine. It will need to be a built to last type system. I want one that I will not need to worry about upgrading for a good while. Mostly because well the ability to buy another will not come anytime again soon.

I want a good and reliable motherboard.

I want at least a 3.0 dual core processor with some power behind it. I currently have a AMD dual core 5000 with 2.60 GHZ.

I want to go with either the newest NVIDIA 8800 or the latest ATI whatever that is. I have a NVIDIA 8600 GT with 256MB on it now. This system is going to my Son.

I want 3GB memory. I would go to 4 but that would mean a 64 bit OS right? I am unsure how practical that would be so i figure 3GB would be good with of course a couple other slots incase i do wish to move up later.

I want to ONLY run Windows XP pro.I do not like Vista tried it disliked it will change when I have No other choice. I would like the system to be able to handle that switch at a later date a year or so from now when they finally get it right.

I also want a top of the line power supply and whatever is needed fan wise to keep it cool as I do run my system a lot and heat was what took out my last machine. i do Not want to skimp in this department yet I have no idea what is needed and best to have.

I do not care for manufactured systems that are full of crap that is not needed. So any ideas. Still unsure if I will go to a local shop and have it done or go though a place like Cyber power or another if anyone has recommendations that would be great. I just want to have the information for what I need and what works well so I am not going in to this blind. if I go the local route which saves shipping and all that nice stuff I will likely have it done here. http://www.tcponline.com/Index.htm This is the place I got this one I am using now. They were a pretty nice shop and for what I could tell prices were fairly ok. They sell the systems but unsure if I can just build it to my liking with them.

My budget is 1000.00 to 1500.00 maybe a tiny bit more. I would rather not get close to the 2000.00 mark if I can stay clear of it http://forums.pcworld.com/images/emoticons/grin.gif

Thank you for any and all help on this.

Hi, Randasmom, I'm glad you're going to venture into building that dream system. I don't think I would ever be able to do such a thing. ?:|

One of our Moderators, MPH, just built his dream system and he has posted a blog with all kinds of great information. I thought you might want to check it out so I went and got the link for you. You can find it at http://forums.pcworld.com/blogs/mphenterprises/2007/12/21/my-gift-to-myself

Good luck to you and have fun. :D

Hi randasmom, This is just a personnal preferance on my part and what I am considering. I would start with an Intel Core2Dual E6850 ( 3.0 Ghz) and build around that. You said you would prefer an 8800 Geforce, so go with the GT. A 600w - 650w PSU should suffice. Not sure of your HDD requirements. So far 200 Gb. has been just fine for me and I'm no where close to outgrowing it yet. You would want a MOBO with a system BUS capability of at least 1067 Mhz that way you could run 800 Mhz memory, maybe more. You are right in that with a 32 bit OS, you will be limited to 3 Gb ram. AS far as 32 bit or 64 bit goes, it is more of a performance issue than a practical issue, and a little pricier. I would look for a case with good ventilation and don't forget about the fans. 60mm fans are generally quieter than the 120mm ones and do a pretty good job. Making sure you have a good flow of air through the case is of utmost importance. As for the OS, I'm with you, although I prefer XP MCE and just bought a copy. One other option is AJUMP.com. I am keeping them in mind as I like their pricing and their options on the build, and yes they will install XP PRO if that is what you want. coastie65

Hi randasmom, As I said in my earlier post, That was my personal preference. I am a Disabled Veteran on a very limited fixed income so have to look for the best I can get for what I can afford on my budget. I liked what saw saw at AJUMP.com as it seems to fit my budget and gives me some options as well for some pretty nifty machines at a good price. coastie65

No problem,........it's just that,........what you want ,.........can be had at , thousands of Wall-Mart's, Best-Buy's, Circuit City's, etc.,as well as online retailers, for cheap prices, all day long,............hardly a dream, .....common really. So try any one of the afore mentioned retailers, and get what you want, with your budget, it really doesn't make sense to build your own,.........unless you just want to, beacuse the big retailers, buy in bulk, and get things cheaper, not to mention a warranty.
