The subheading "Despite recent setbacks for the Blu-ray format ..." is wrong. The setbacks have been for HD DVD.

Looks to me like the standards war is pretty much over. If consumers don't start purchasing more blu ray players I don't think it will be because they are worried about the which type to buy but rather because of the price of the blu ray players.

If the big studios really wanted to see proliferation of high def dvd players to display their content, they should be subsidizing the price of blu ray players.

Misleading subheadline; Correction: "...setback for the HD-DVD format...". Get your facts straight!

IMHO, simply buy a dual format player when affordable, just we all had to do with DVD burners.

I don't see a clear winner either. The Blu_ray players are to costly for the average buyer, then to add to that Sony says you have to keep buying a new player to keep up to date. The hd moves cost 50% more. I have a Hd Dvd player and it upconverts so good it almost impossible to tell sd from hd. Down loading hd movies probably will be the next process anyway. Even if Blu-ray wins out I will just keep my Hd Dvd player and let it upconvert, and save the money. I save money on hd movies by online rental anyway.

I think now with the ps3 being down to 399.99 you will see familys jumping on board blu-ray bus. I know as a family we where going to get a wii but are going to get a ps3 next month instead.

399.99 is a lot of money for a good percent of the families in the usa especially with the price of gas and other goods. I think they will stick with their old dvd player, and if they buy a new one the 39.99 looks a look better than 399.99, and 30.00 for a movie.

I am saying the people out there that are upgrading there gaming rigs or dvd players that are going to be spending the money any way lean more to the ps3. If I had to have gotten one this weekend instead of a new tv.

Re: Retailers See High-Def Format War Dragging On
The everyday people I know are not interested in a ps3, the younger crowd maybe. My daughter has a ps3 and I asked her if she was buying any blu-ray disc. She replied that they were just to expensive to buy. She has to spend her extra money on gas to get to work. In most retail stores it is hard to locate the hd movies. I asked a sales clerk in Walmart where the hd movies are, he replied back we just have a few and they are scattered in with the other movies, I tried to look and finally gave up. I just don't think people are willing to pay 50% more for a movie. For thirty two dollars, tax and all I could just go to the movie theater with my family and see it on a big screen.
