Word 2007 Takes a Long Time to Load in Windows Vista

Hi,

I recently bought a Compaq laptop (running Vista) and it came pre-installed with MS Office 2007 (Home and Student version). The laptop is OK overall except one problem. It took a tremendously long time to bring up Word (> 10 minutes). I don't know if anyone else out there experiencing this problem, and if there are any ways that I can do to get rid of this problem, please let me know..

Other office applications like Excel and Powerpoint, the loading time is fine...Just Word that is taking a long time.

Thank You !

Tony

Have you tried uninstalling Office and reinstalling? It is possible that something got "corrupted" and a reinstall might help.

Hi,

This trial version of MS Office 2007 (student & home edition) came pre-installed on my laptop. I did not receive any CDs at all. Just the laptop only.

So I have no means of re-installing this software.

thanks,

Tony

That is the typical problem sometimes with pre-installed software. If you decide to buy it (i.e. you like the trial and decide to pay for full use), then I would suggest going to a store to buy it with install disks...unless they give you some really good deal by just buying the code to switch the trial to the full version.

In the mean time, the only way that I can think to "reinstall" it would be to use the recovery partition/disks to completely re-install everything. I am not sure if that is worth it, however. It is a lot to do for a result that is not guaranteed.

Beyond that, I cannot think why Word would take so long to open, which Excel and Powerpoint don't.

Re: Word 2007 Takes a Long Time to Load in Windows Vista

The situation is rather moot. If you like the application, you can purchase the Office 2007 Home & Student edition full install package from Newegg for $122 and it even good for installing on three different machines. If you have more than the one machine, that may be a benefit.

If you don't like the package, after the 60-day trial it will cease working anyway.

For point of reference, Word, as part of my Home & Student package (2 of 3 installations used), comes up on my HP dv9500t with Vista in 10 seconds.

Have you removed the Norton Internet Security and some of the other "free" and "sample" software that came pre-loaded. It may be that the load from all those unneccesary programs are delaying the load. Norton's is a well noted application that will slow down any machine.

Re: Word 2007 Takes a Long Time to Load in Windows Vista

Hey, norton might take more system resources at start up, but actually once its running it uses less than lets say AVG, it said it the PC Format mag.

AS to {color:#000000}c370872{color}

But ya i still think that norton is not the way to go, so i think as you should unistalll Norton and if you going on the net i recommend AVG and Super anti spy, these can be downloaded from the following sites. [AVG|http://free.grisoft.com/doc/2/] and [ANTI SPY|http://www.superantispyware.com/]

You see as rgreen said it is a trial version so everything will not be available and it will not run as well as the full version. So i if you like Office 2007, then i recommend you to get it, but its not that great if you have 2003 and you don't need all new upgrades then i can say keep to 2003, as i have 2007 and its more confusing, but i needed to find out about it, but if you are advanced user then sure get 2007, as also when you buy office 2007 legally you can put it on three computers.

Re: Word 2007 Takes a Long Time to Load in Windows Vista

The three installation rule is only for Home & Student. The other versions (which are more expensive are one installation per license). Some complain about the (non-commercial use) tag in the tope window frame, but for the savings, I don't care. Some who are Outlook users will not like it either as it is not present in the Home & Student edition. I use webmail and download those I want to keep onto my old XP machine with Outlook Express.

Do buy the book - Excell 2007 or Word 2007 - The Missing Manual. It helps guide you through the changes. I started buying that series with Windows 2000 and also have the XP, XP SP2, and Vista OS editions also. They explain in detail without treating you like a dummy, and they are not bare minimum books that rip you off. The Vista book is over 800 pages and the best $35 I ever spent. I still go to it many time. Heck, I still have to look stuff up in the XP book. I don't use the W2K book anymore, since I don't have it on any machine.

Re: Word 2007 Takes a Long Time to Load in Windows Vista

c370872 - two comments. First, I have loaded and used Office 2000 on a desktop with Vista and had no problems. I did this in response to a question by another member. I would therefore have to assume you should have not problem with Word 2003 except for the activation which is independent of the OS.

Second comment - if you did not completely remove Norton's by using the Symantec removal tool instead of the Windows add/remove function, it did not completely remove. I usually refer to that as pulling it out by its roots, and it leaves traces everywhere. Most members of this consider McAfee Secuity Suite almost as bad as Norten's. I personally run Avast as an anti-virus and Superantispyware, both free for non-commercial use.

Let us know how it comes out.
